$1.7B is pennies compared to other recent sports franchise sales.

I imagine the stadium situation knocked the price down a ton

Its the Rays and they no longer have a stadium so I mean, the fact that they even got this much should speak volumns on how valuable these organizations now are

The most recent MLB team sale was the Baltimore Orioles, which was finalized in March 2024 when a group led by David Rubenstein purchased a controlling stake from the Angelos family for $1.725 billion

The Kansas City Royals baseball team was sold in late 2019 to an ownership group led by John Sherman. The sale was finalized in November 2019 with the approval of Major League Baseball owners. The previous owner was David Glass, who had owned the team since 2000. The sale price was reported to be around $1 billion.

Loved those Joe Maddon Ray's teams that played the Rangers in the AL Division Series.

They’d be way more valuable in Charlotte or Nashville

Based on what?

They’re comfortably in the top half of metro TV ratings in a metro that’s larger than both of those (almost 50% larger than Nashville). People care, they just don’t want to go to games, and attendance - which is not anywhere near as big a profitability driver as TV money, for all teams - is and has always been a function of the stadium. A new one will be warranted in all 3 cities, so no leg up there. Now add that baseball in general has far less allure in younger metros and the overwhelming majority of baseball fans in both of those markets have existing teams. Plus both have FAR less AL East transplants living there to buy tickets, so they won’t even be able to monetize non-Rays interest nearly as well. Even worse, the team that is by far the most popular in each metro (Braves) isn’t even in the same league

The Rays are in year 27 and are just now really starting to capitalize on first generation native fans starting to have families. At this point what do either of those markets offer that is meaningfully superior other than aspiration?

All the Rays need is a new owner and a nice stadium closer to downtown Tampa and their stigma completely changes overnight

No stadium is almost an improvement over the Trop. Hopefully new owner makes a stadium in Tampa happen.

Always wondered this - the investment groups who buy teams. How in the heck do they know how to run a professional sports team?

Look at Jim Crane - he built the Astros into a formidable team and he was from the valve and logistics realm, nothing to do with sports.

Seems like it would be a huge and quick learning curve.

Because they aren't making the decisions. They are putting competent people in charge, empowering them to make their own decisions, and giving them resources
