Did you ever know any kids when you were young that always wanted to be a politician?

Some co workers and I were discussing the other day how none of us could remember going to school with anyone in jr high or high school who always wanted to go into politics, except for one guy who knew a guy that from the 8th grade on wanted to be a politician. Said the kid was always weird and ended up working on the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. Said he’s pretty sure it’s a they/them now. Anyway, who here knew someone that always wanted to go into politics and were they normal or a freak?

Couple in high school that definitely liked politics and wanted to go to law school.

And several in college, almost all of which moved to DC and did just that, worked in politics one way or another

Yea, me.

Voted most likely to become president in high school. Worked for a couple of campaigns. Quickly reailized that it was a game and hated how fake everything was.

My nephew wants to be involved in politics. He's the most determined and driven kid I've ever known. I told him when he becomes president, I get 3 get out of jail free cards.

My next door neighbor who was a year older than me. Ran in every school election, was Ross Perot in our mock election rally in high school, and went to Boys' State. After spending many years in the Coast Guard, he ran and won a Florida Senate seat. One of the smartest people I've ever known.

Knew a guy in my high school that loved ‘that life’. Was always president of student council and multiple ‘clubs’. The guy was very nice and charismatic enough to get along with everyone.

It was more of a ‘pick on him for being a future POTUS’ type thing which was more complementary.

He went off to some high end university in the northeast and stayed in that part of the country. He’s was a state senator at some point. No idea where he is now.

Boys' State

the guy that we elected as Governor at our Boy's State, believe his name was Keith, can't remember the last name, but anyway, this dude was the greatest speaker I have ever heard IRL...even at that young age, his ability to not only speak intelligently, but to also speak in a way to grip the audience and elicit an emotional response, was something to behold.... i've often wondered if he ever went into politics, b/c he definitely had a knack for it

Tons in my circle in HS and college. A lot us worked on campaigns and on the hill. When I was in college DC was basically NYC for SEC kids.

That has faded, and I only know a few who are careerists in politics from that group. People change, but so did the allure of it IMO. I think it's the same for a lot of stuff from my era - politics, consulting, biglaw, investment banking - none of it really has as much sex appeal as it did in those days.

We couldn't have elected a better coroner. Pale, skinny, quiet kid with jet black hair, sharp features and an evil smile. He looked like death already. In his campaign speech he said he'd pick up all the dead bugs in the dorm.

One of my kid's father-in-law was a Boys State Governor.

An attorney now, never ran for office but is some kind of sharp on his feet.

Insurance defense.

Yes, some kid in West Monroe that went to Ole Miss. Dude legitimately wanted to be president growing up. I think he is just another lawyer now.

Yes.
A guy I know went to school for polySci/public policy then went to UK for PhD in government affairs. I always told him he’s gonna be running for office one day but so far haven’t seen his name yet.

I was pretty interested in it. I worked as an intern during college at the capitol and by the first two weeks I was both disappointed and disgusted with how lame and scummy it all was. I couldve been plugged right in to the post college DC scene but I just couldnt convince myself to do it. Went into O&G instead.

my dad ws a fairly influential man and had politicians crawling to him because of his influence and of course, ahem, "contributions," with a couple of exceptions every one that I was around just gave me the heebie jeebie sleaze feeling, all so fake and contrived
