This just annoys me. It was dumb when they started doing it three years ago, and it’s even dumber now.

Sports is supposed to be place where we put aside politics and all the other BS going on in the world. Players can’t help where they are from nor do they control the actions of their governments.

Who decides what counties should be allowed to be represented? China has a terrible human rights record. Should their flag be shown next to their players. Some say the US is supporting questionable actions around the world. Should our flag be shown? I bet they would show the flags for Iranian and North Korean players if there were any.

If you’re not comfortable with politics then just don’t show any flags for anyone.

It's one of the grossest displays of discrimination and bigotry in our lives and its shows the hypocrisy of the mainstream left.

As if these players had a CHOICE as to where they were born. Literally zero difference between discriminating against a players country of birth versus their race.

Bigotry. No other word for it.

Yeah. I’m pretty sure about that. They certainly do at the Olympics. And why does it matter anyway. Do you think showing a flag or not showing a flag affects global politics?

Of course it matters. It changes the way the players are viewed and cheered for, especially in a sport that has a ton of shitlib fans like global tennis.

It affects their sponsorships and (for all we know) affects their draw and scheduling from time to time.

It's western virtue signaling. NOTHING more.

Like you said, the players aren't directing the actions of their governments, and their home country is their home country. It's not a statement. Just a fact. If Wimbledon, and other events have an issue then don't allow those players to participate. But if you are going to allow them to participate (as they should), then it is reasonable to acknowledge where they are from.

Not showing the flag doesn't accomplish ANYTHING except making the virtue signalers feel good and morally superior. Of course, in the end, that's the ONLY thing important to them.

Rybakina winning the title the year they banned Russians was hysterical because she is a Russian who switched citizenship at 19 years old.

Yeah and zero of the active players supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zero of the active players live in Russia or White Russia.

Used to be. Just look at this board and it's clear to see that now many just consider sports as an avenue to push politics. The skyrocketing amount of WNBA threads being the most obvious example.

why mention Iran but not Israel? if there’s one country who’s flag arguably shouldn’t be shown…

It's not new. Olympics were boycotted due to politics. There was a time when Mississippi schools wouldn't play in post-season tourneys that included black players.

I hate it with Russian athletes being banned these days. It's totally fricked up recent wrestling Olympics and world championships.

thanks for starting a thread that's been driving me nuts for a long time. They even do it to Sabalenka who is from Belarus. I'm pro Ukraine mostly in the current scenario, but let's not act like they haven't committed atrocities as well.

We literally just bombed Iran. I'm no Pro-Palestinian dove, but Israel has state sanctioned killed thousands of women and children in pursuit of Hamas.

it's a bunch of bullshite.

Even worse when they throw this on Andreeva. Literally the sweetest, most innocent player on tour.

Yeah it has to. It's silly to think it doesn't have a negative effect on their marketability. That's how they make their money. Not fair at all to the players.

And there it is, haha. Political thread on sports board about politics mission accomplished.

Some just can’t get away from it.

There are a lot of countries on earth, doing a wide variety of good and bad things to varying degrees. It's really retarded how selective these sporting associations are with "de-platforming" entire nations for various pet reasons.

It adds an element of politics and subjective ethics to something that has absolutely nothing to do with that, golf, tennis, chess, etc.

And yes, the term virtue signaling gets thrown around a lot but this is a really great example of what that term actually means. It's eye rolling.
