Imported fish at sushi restaurants…there’s been a big push on the MS coast to ‘come clean’

The push started with real infringements such as Mahoney’s, but now they’re really cracking down. ‘They’ went restaurant to restaurant and made sure if they were selling Royal Reds, they had Royal Reds to sell…most all are now listed as Ruby Reds, lol.

Now the push seems to have gotten into the sushi menus…where you must, I assume it’s a rule, declare whether your seafood is imported or not. IDK if Imported is into the state, or into the country. Check out all the I’s next to the sushi. I give them credit for being honest…but holy hell.

Does the US even have any number of sushi grade type fisheries and fishing operations?

I assume most sushi grade fish is imported and flash frozen for import.

No but that’s a great business idea.

I thought salmon and tuna were domestic at least, unless it’s on the special board at a place.

I don’t know why this is even an issue at a sushi place though…but clearly there are rules now. Can’t they just say ‘all fish imported’ and leave off the 56 I’s?

I've seen the occasional special board offering in New Orleans that actually highlights a local fish. I think it's usually been somethign like a snapper or amberjack.

And miss out on being able to highlight their domestic lobster?

The wagyu is listed as neither…so the rules must be focused on fish.

Seafood, but yeah.

I wouldn't expect "local" fish at almost any sushi place down here

All the salmon they use is farm raised. Which is why it's fatty

True. And there isnt exactly a large fleet of commercial tuna fishing in the gulf anymore not since circa 2017

That’s kind of dumb. I don’t go to a sushi restaurant expecting to eat local fish.

I suppose it’s a law aimed at other restaurants but has to be applied equally across the board.

The D by the lobster items suggests I means imported from another country. That's probably Maine lobster, not MS lobster.

As a Landmass native, it’d really piss me off if my fav sushi joint had an I next to the catfish nigiri.

This was what I was thinking as well. Weren't some local seafood joints made example of to the tune of quite a bit of money? I have to imagine those folks immediately started pointing fingers at seafood spots that fly under the radar for these sorts of laws like sushi joints.

Speaking of Toro, went there on Saturday and thought the sushi was very meh. For the price I have had much better. The yuzu soy stir fry and edamame were solid though.

We go often, and yea, you’re spot on… We eat upstairs at the bar and it can be quite nice up there.

$3 big Sapporo cans on Wednesday.

Our other sushi joint is Fatsumo, in the Pass, and it’s not really traditional either. Have to go to Samurai in Gulfport…and the outside of that place is a dump. Not really the wheelhouse of the coast.

Are they really charging $23 for a tuna roll (Snap Dragon: Tuna and Asaparagus)? We have crossed the price line of retarded. Wow

Is there not any local tuna available? I can't imagine the cost is anything more than $1 per roll, they are using like 3oz of tuna per roll.

Also shrimp? Its not that hard to source local shrimp. Again we are talking about a matter of ounces per dish here. They are probably using 20 lbs of shrimp a night.

The majority of the list is kinda lame considering that stuff isn't local no matter what:
Salmon
Yellowtail
Eel

See my comment about tuna in the Gulf. Its a dying commercial fishery. I'd take a guess way more tuna are harvested recreationally.
