Hertz customers outraged over AI-powered scanner that detects small marks, charges hundreds — including $440 for one-inch scuff
Hertz customers are complaining they were charged hundreds of dollars for minor scrapes and dents that were detected by the rental car giant’s new artificial intelligence-powered scanner — with little recourse to dispute the charges.
Patrick, a customer who rented a Volkswagen from Hertz-owned Thrifty at Hertz’s Atlanta airport location — its first US store to implement UVeye tech — told The Drive that he received a bill “minutes” after returning the car.
Hertz demanded that Patrick cough up $440 for a one-inch scuff on one of the car’s wheels. The fee included $250 for the repair, $125 for “processing” and $65 for “administration.”
When Patrick logged into the Hertz web app, he was shown photographic proof of the damage that was flagged by UVeye scanners.
He told The Drive that he was offered a discount — $52 off if he paid within two days, or $32.50 off if he paid within a week. But Patrick held off.
“Saving $30 to accept responsibility is not worth it,” he told The Drive.
When Patrick tried to take up the matter with a live customer service rep, he found the challenge to be quite daunting.
Customers are directed to a web portal where they can view before-and-after photos captured by the scanners.
But if they have concerns, their options are limited. A chatbot can flag the issue for review, but there’s no live agent to talk to.

One frustrated Reddit user, posting under the handle professor_pimpcain, shared a similar experience after returning a car to Hertz’s Atlanta location. “It automatically sent me a bill for this ‘ding’. $195,” they wrote.

Earlier this year, Hertz announced that it was partnering with UVeye, an Israel-based firm that specializes in rapid, automated car inspections that have been described as an “MRI for vehicles.” By year’s end, Hertz says it will have more than 100 of UVeye’s AI-powered scanners operating at US airport locations.
These machines perform full-body vehicle scans in seconds, detecting damage such as dents, scrapes and cracked glass both before and after a rental.

UVeye is reportedly in talks with additional rental agencies, suggesting broader adoption may be on the horizon.

I would demand a copy of the UVeye scan immediately before he took it out. If they cannot provide that, then how can they prove he was the one that made that "scuff." Given how small and insignificant it is, they can’t blame him for not seeing it when he took out the car if their agents couldn’t see it when he turned in the car and they were relying on some bullshite AI scanner to find it for them.

If all companies go to this I’m never renting again.

If I was worried about being charged for tiny scratches I would never rent from that company.
This will be changed quickly.

If there is a car rental story about a customer being inconvenienced, over charged, or accused of a felony it will be Hertz rental company involved. This AI deal is BS.

Just another in a long line of examples of Hertz being an absolute dogshit company.

If the descriptions and photos are accurate, that’s normal wear and tear on a vehicle. Just as I cannot demand a discount from Hertz because a rented vehicle shows common signs of non-negligent wear and tear, I should not be financially penalized for normal, non-negligent wear and tear either.
If I demanded a discount for a small ding on the fender, Hertz would tell me that it's unreasonable to expect a pristine rental car, and rightly so. Conversely, were I to leave a small ding on the fender of a Hertz car, and they expected me to pay a fee, I would explain to them that it's unreasonable to expect a pristine rental car. Then I'd tell them "Get fricked."
Congrats on losing my business permanently and damaging your brand for an extra $119.
Hertz or any other rental company that tries to pull this shite can kiss my arse. I’d never rent from them again.

Hertz also randomly gets people arrested over "stolen cars" since it can't figure out what was returned.

Sounds like a class action if they arent repairing after every charge. Charging 10 people and then paying once is BS

They tried getting me for a missing spare tire once.
I have no idea if the spare tire was there or not.
They removed the charge but it was a hassle.

How long before this AI is called racist or sexist?

So you agree to pay for any damage to their car you incur, but Bitch up storm when they charge you? Makes a lot of sense.

That's not what they are saying. I've rented cars with dings. I told the attendants and they've all told me they only look at major dents or scratches. Anything small gets ignored.
Personal story, we rented a minivan from Hertz in Pittsburgh during the winter. On our trip back to the airport the rear hatch latch stopped working. We couldn't close the door. Hertz tried to charge me for 1) not returning the vehicle on time. They had it towed directly to a shop to be fixed. 2) for the van being dirty. We had left a few leaves on the floor boards and left the rental agreement in the van. They tried to charge me for it being excessively dirty.

My first thought too. I get their want here, but they are getting nit picky with stuff that is out of the control of the driver, like a rock hitting the car. That's the cost of doing business imo. What's next...a bobber in the gas tank for not fully topping off the gas tank?? Or not, picking up some dirt/pebbles off the floor mats??

Simple: there will be competitors who advertise they don’t use the AI tech and feast on new business.
Hertz will back track 100%

This issue for some reason makes me irrationally angry so there I admit my problem and truth be told Hertz and I have had some battles in the past. My question is does Hertz after they charge and collect payment from a customer for one these damaged areas do they actually fix that damaged area.? My guess is no and then they charge another customer for the same damage over and over again. Quite the little scam going is probably what is happening. . I quit renting from hertz and enterprise years ago for similar nonsense like this.

Rented from Hertz at PHL last week. Got a Tacoma truck and drove it 40 miles. Returned it same day with the gas gauge at Full. When I was emailed the receipt it had a $100.02 refueling charge tacked on. The next day I called Hertz and had it removed. I wonder how many people don’t notice or don’t care because it’s on an expense report. Seems like a shady practice by Hertz.
