Anyone struggle falling asleep?

I’m in my early/mid-40s and I’ve had problems with this recently. I can’t pinpoint when it started but within the last 6 months. Only thing I’ve changed in the last 6 months is in 2025 I cut back on drinking a good bit and started lifting weights again after a 8 yr hiatus to get myself some strength and muscle back for longevity.
Even if I’m exhausted from not sleeping the night before, I struggle to fall asleep…sometimes tossing and turning for hours until 3 or 4 am despite getting in bed at 9-9:30 after having woken up at 5:30am for work. It’s like my mind races and sometimes I feel like I get tiny shots adrenaline while I’m trying to sleep that just jolt me back up.
I drink on average probably 3-4 times per month. I exercise (weights and jogging) 6 days a week and am in really good physical shape for my age. I eat really healthy. I have relatively low stress - good job, married with great kids, no money problems, no major health problems, etc. I usually eat dinner like 4 hrs before I try to go to bed (my wife-no pics-likes to eat early with the kids).
I used to use Melatonin and that still works if I use it but I have been trying my best to avoid it for fear of developing a dependency. Instead I take some Magnesium glycinate 20min before I want to fall asleep and that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Anyway I understand it to be good for me even if it doesn’t help me sleep so low risk.
Anyone have any idea what may be wrong or what I can do? I’m wondering if this is some sort of mid-life crisis as it feels like anxiety despite there being no objective reason for it. Sometimes when I’m drifting off I get flooded with really dark thoughts about things happening to my kids, my family, the world, etc.
I need help before I birth a Tyler Durden or develop health problems for lack of sleep. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same struggle. I honestly have no answer for this. I just sleep around 3-4 hours of broken sleep a night.

I have been having problems recently. I think its due to my coffee intake. I cut it out after noon. We shall see.
I'm pretty much always wired on coffee.

I occasionally have the same problem. The other night it took me 2-3 hours to fall asleep, happens maybe once every 2 months.
The trick that I found is placing the air purifier directly to me at 5-6 ft distance. The white noise and cool breeze blowing on my face does the trick.

What's your caffeine intake/schedule look like? How much and what type of screen time after about 6:00 pm?

Mate get an Eight Sleep system. It is the best investment I've ever made.

two thing that help for me:
1. after laying there for a while, I'll get up and spend 5 min stretching.
2. for some reason I think about laying on a beach bed in the middle of the summer with nothing to worry about except my drink being refilled. For some reason this usually puts me right down.
Stay off the phone.

I fall asleep fine. I can't stay asleep. If I make it to 3am I'm happy.

Me too... Not sure how I lived without it.

What time are you working out?

same issue as you Ninja but my issues are 100% work related.
I don't sleep well M-Friday but on Saturday when I'm off work I can sleep like its nobody's business. Sunday night I have issues going back to sleep and it's often because I was reading work emails or worried about that.
Idk how to disconnect. But the past 5 days I've been off on PTO and have had 0 issues sleeping until last night, when I knew I had to be back at the office this morning.

I am falling asleep OK, but waking up in the 3-5 range and I can't fall back asleep.

I use the beam powder stuff. Its kinda expensive but seems to work for me. I can typically tell when I'm kind of amped up at bed time and use it on those nights.

Honestly - as you get older your sleeping habits start to change. I started having issues in my 40s. Exercise helps of course but now I take a light sleep Rx from my dr. I sleep about 5-6 hours each night. Wait til you get into your 60s/70s. That when most people really start having issues.
