we were 'poor' meaning we drank hy-top powdered milk and in general the idea any food-related morsel would find its way into the garbage was one of the most sacrilegious things that could ever occur under my dad's watch...
anyway, despite that, we always had multiple magazine subscriptions; my mom put her foot down
and not having reading material for us kids was her line in the sand with my dad's hijinks.
here are ones i remember getting as a kid
HIGHLIGHTS
my older brother was a bit of an a-hole and more OCD than me so i was not allowed to circle a single hidden picture. we had to find them and not reveal them for anyone who picked up that magazine in the following 50 years...
and of course, gotta mention the goat!
Also subscribed to Cricket magazine; i mainly enjoyed the little cartoon story along the bottom of each page where the little bugs were commenting on every story in the magazine..kinda like a 70s/80s version of Mystery Science Theater.
EVERYONE was in cub scouts growing up
Schools issued these to all the kids in the suburbs.
then there were these other random mags my mom got me that were a little odd, but ok, i had alot of 'down time' so i read these too
And when my mom wasn't looking i rode my bike to the Big Star around the corner scouring the magazine rack
Finally how in the WORLD did they just put these out at the grocery stores for anyone to pick up??? its 2025 and chicken still won't let us post the images you could enjoy as a prepubescent kid which sent my hormones into overdrive.

If more people here subscribed to MAD Magazine, they'd get my "snappy answers to stupid questions," a lot quicker.
Boy's Life, and Consumer Reports, which I liked reading as a kid. Grandparents always had National Geographic, which I'd read every few years when I visited as a kid.

if i could pull myself away from heavy metal long enough, these were 2 other solid 'go tos'.
grocery store was very patient to let me and my degenerate friends post up next to the magazines for hours.
70s and 80s 'kids' magazines with covers like these just chilling on the shelf as you walked by were WILD

I had Highlights when I was a kid. As a teen I didn't get into all the Mad Magazine or young adult magazines. All my friend's mom's had readers digest I would read when taking a dump at their houses. Pretty good stuff.
