Had to bring my Great Dane to the emergency vet tonight with bloat. Wife’s a wreck and can’t sleep so she’s keeping me up.

I’ve had Danes for 20 years now and never had one get bloat. I think this dog is cursed

When we adopted him he had heart worms and bad skin tags that we had removed and treated the heart worms. Then in 2023 he got aspirated pneumonia.

If you have a deep chested dog I’d recommend getting the stomach tacked when you get them fixed. I wish all rescues offered this or did this. We did this on our last rescue when she was fixed.

Their stomachs will kill them sometimes. Very common in a dog this size. Wish him luck!

I had one of mine have the same. Vet performed surgery and stapled his stomach I think to his ribs so it couldn’t happened again. Lived the longest life. Best dogs are Great Danes. I wish you the best. Miss him still.

Deep chested dogs are more prone to bloat, and a Great Dane is certainly a deep chested dog.

I have a Doberman puppy (previously had a Dobie for 10 years as well). I used an elevated food bowl stand, a slow-feeder bowl, and made sure my Dobie was calm for at least 45 minutes before eating, and 45 minutes after eating, before any play or exercise was introduced.

I hope your boy makes it through. Bloat is deadly.

I did not know that was even a thing... dadgummit I just had my golden retriever fixed last week- I would've asked for that bc my GSD died with bloat 4 years ago.

I hope all is well this morning? Bloat is a huge fear of mine with my dogs. I do everything possible to help against it happening, but you can’t really prevent it. Stomach tacking is costly and some vets aren’t comfortable performing the procedure or don’t recommend. When I asked once years ago, my then-vet talked against it and said he wouldn’t do it to his own dog. My dogs are old now but if I were starting young, I’d ask my current vet. Rescues can’t afford to stomach tack. It’s not routine for one and, again, costly.

Please let us know how your Buddy is doing this mowing.

lost my bloodhound to bloat. It’s heart breaking that something like that is so endemic and there’s not a whole lot you can do to prevent it

Yeah we do those same things. He was a rescue and in terrible shape when we got him so he freaks out over food.

The Vet said it just happens and there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. It happened a couple hours after he ate. I’ve never had any issues with my past Danes and they lived to 11.5 and 13. I did have to put one down that I rescued after a couple of years that had cancer.

I used Azalea Lakes when I lived in Baton Rouge and when we had our last rescue fixed we paid to have her stomach tacked. I want to say it was only another $90 to $150 to have it done because they did it at the same time we were having her fixed.

Poor thing is missing her buddy and been up my arse all morning
