Holy shite what a great movie and really solid cast. I think it’s the best I’ve ever seen from Daniel Craig. Was this movie talked about when it came out? I’d never heard of it before seeing it on prime and giving it a watch.

Yea, great movie. I feel like at one point years ago it went through a mini cult classic phase but since has become so well known it’s grown out of that moniker

It's never been real popular but it has had quite the cult following. Deeply underrated film. It's a classic and has aged well!

Was the movie that got him the Bond role. Btw Sienna Miller was unreal hot in that movie.

It’s how he got Bond.

I saw it after he was announced as Bond and I was sold after initially being skeptical about some blonde gargoyle being James Bond.

I remember seeing/buying it at Best Buy. I think I had just heard of Daniel Craig.

From what I remember, it was talked about by my friends that were Guy Ritchie, Sexy Beast, etc fans

I could be watching that movie right now. It is an unbelievably good crime film. Top 10 all time favorite of mine.

Have you watched Mobland?

Yeah, it being mentioned as similar to those films were the main reason I watched. So I thought it was a good Bond hire with him when it happened because of layer cake.

Was interesting seeing Gambon go from mobster to Dumbledore.

Layer Cake is awesome and one of the few movies I'd accept the "we miraculously saved him" angle in a sequel to permit a sequel (which Matthew Vaught ironically DID use in the Kingsman sequel, which was bad).

The movie also has some crazy-good quotables.

quote:

You're born, you take shite. You get out in the world, you take more shite. You climb a little higher, you take less shite. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shite even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son.

quote:

fricking females is for poofs.

quote:

England. Typical. Even drug dealers don't work weekends.

quote:

Everyone wants to walk through a door marked "private." Therefore, have a good reason to be affluent.

quote:

I'll treat this lunch like a last supper, feign interest in his nostalgic tales, and get out.

quote:

It's all about honour and respect with these head-banging nationalist outfits.

And this may have been the hottest Sienna Miller looked in a movie, which is always a bonus.

I got that guy Ritchie/kingsman vibe to it, but better actually. It’s as if the more recent Ritchie movies or kingsman was trying to recapture the lightning that was layer cake. For example, I loved the gentleman with Mathew mcconaughey, but after watching layer cake idk if I’ll ever be able to watch it again, because it just feels like the great value version of a similar story. Whole movie seemed authentic and perfectly paced, which some of the newer English gangster movies haven’t done a great job of imo. They feel almost too fast paced in recent years. This was brisk but not too quick.

Sienna miller

The early 2000s when this came out, keen Eddie & Alfie, she was one of my GOAT babes.

In Alfie specifically, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a hotter chick in a movie. I feel like she started to age really quickly though. But in that early to mid 2000s period she was one of my all time favorites.

This was one of the DVDs I got from Netflix in my first “3 at a time rental”, 20 or so years ago.

I wondered that while I was watching it. There’s the scenes he does with the gun and when he’s going to the country club and is dressed up where he looked remarkably bond.

it's the nuanced british crime film that Guy Ritchie wishes he would have made. So great.

It may have helped that the screenplay was adapted by the same guy that wrote the book

exactly!!! And I love guy Ritchie but you’re right! It’s like when the sequel is better than the original

Funny thing about those GIFs is a minute after that scene occurred in the movie Craig's character (did he have a name?) had forgotten all about her.

I had been seeing this on Prime for a while and watched it for the first time last night based on this thread.

Awesome movie with a great soundtrack.
