No more hurricane data says DOD

U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday it would no longer process and deliver data essential to most hurricane forecasts as of the end of the month. Seriously can someone explain this to me, do we no longer need this or something? Why would they stop providing this data after all these years?

So let me see if I understand. I paid the govt to launch satellites, purchase hardware and software, access to high speed Internet, and human intel to track weather events, and the govt for decades has just handed out that data like Halloween candy . . . .

And then TV stations, cable news networks, so-called chasers sell ads to show something I already paid for, Or they charge me for cable access, or a subscription service, or cell service to obtain info that i already paid for with my taxes

How nice for them. I'd be mad too, I guess

After reading the article, it is mostly data from the
DOD satellites that won't be avalable anymore, which are superior (microwave technology) to the standard weather satellite. The DOD satellites will still exists, but the data won't be shared anymore.
On the face of it, it seems like a dick move.

I’m all for cutting waste in government, but I don’t agree so much with cutting jobs to NOAA and national parks. Some people do those jobs because they truly love it and it’s their passion. A good forest ranger does that job because it’s what they always wanted to do, etc. same for a meteorologist who’s not on TV.

Great timing too....

Seems short-sighted especially with no rational provided....

I am sure congress will provide funding for NOAA to replace the capability with their own satellites

Doesn’t mean you get to have a job and have it funded by the garnished wages of others.

Hurricanes affect red states almost exclusively. Red states voted for this. Let the red states reap what they sow.

Since the article was 90% drama and no explanation was given as to why.... I'm guessing their is a good reason and it may even be temporary.

If it's so critical, the NOAA should do it with their own equipment, which we also pay for.

Gonna have to depend on the Department of Commerce. DOD should be doing other stuff.
