History of New Orleans trade blunders in sport.

The trade last night needs to play out until this time next year. Hopefully Queen makes all of our fans forget all the negative attacks on this organization. But, the worst trades in our city history starts with Jazz GM Barry Mendelson trading our number one to the Lakers for Gail Goodrich. That #1 was Magic Johnson.
In second place the Saints traded their #1 the first pick in the 1967 draft to Baltimore for Gary Cuozzo That pick for Baltimore was Big BUBBA SMITH
In third place the Saints traded the #2 pick in the first round to the Colts for Billy Newsome, a #4, and a backup linebacker. That #2 pick was Bert Jones. Do I have to say anymore?
In fourth place the Saints traded the fourth pick in the first round for Jim Taylor in the 1968 draft. That player was Phil Vandersea.
In fifth place is the entire Saints draft for Ricky Williams.
In sixth place the New Orleans Buccaneers traded Doug Moe, and Larry Brown for Steve Jones, Barry Leibewitz, and Ron Franz.
In seventh place and this one made me sick the moment I heard it. Dyson Daniels for Murray. Murray was shipped out by Pop in San Antonio. Gladly shipped out by the Hawks. Dyson Daniels was an absolute dog at 19 years old. He can guard one through five his ROOKIE YEAR. Daniels is a stud defender that was improving each year on the offensive side of the ball. An absolute pathetic trade by Griffin. This trade by itself warrants dismissal of Griffin.
I'm tired of losing. I've been patient, I pay for my tickets, but this year the Pels must improve with wins in the 40's.

It needs to play out longer than that. Apparently the Pels had Queen as #6 overall. So even if they end up with a top 5 pick, that doesn’t mean the trade is lost if Queen does turn out to the difference maker that our FO is expecting.

It’s a sad sordid affair with sports on NOLA. Only 2 hires (Jim Finks and Sean Payton) have the competent skillset to build a roster that could be considered elite.
Because NOLA is such an undesirable location to live it is very difficult to attract the type of management or coaching talent that leads to championship rosters.
This trickles to Oschner and other auxiliary staff supporting the teams. Couple this with an owner in over her head and you get the results we have today.
Lower your expectations and you can get some feeble enjoyment in a dark humor sort of way with the teams.

We already had Archie Manning.

We traded Dyson to give CJ minutes now CJ ain't even here, and the Charlotte hornets drafted Kobe and traded him to Lakers, imagine Kobe with the hornets

Then maybe we could’ve drafted John Hannah (went 4th) and could’ve kept Archie upright for a decade.

Archie Manning wasn't a patch on Bert Jones arse in the NFL. If the Saints had drafted Jones, they could have traded Manning for probably three #1's.

The Dyson trade was inexcusable. We had a guy that could legit guard 1-5 AND wanted to play defense. AND a rookie contract.
His offense could come around but really doesn’t matter when you can defend and rebound like he can.

All you do is shite on New Orleans and the teams. It’s crazy how you still on this board. No one is asking you to support them. If I dislike something, you won’t see me bitching about it everyday

The amount of mental gymnastics half this fanbase is doing to tell themselves no matter what this was a good trade is sad

Well the fact is it wasn't A TRADE.
Goodrich held out in the fall of 1975 and missed the first four games while playing out his option to become a free agent the following season (1976-77).
On August 6, 1976, Goodrich signed a three-year contract, reportedly worth $1.4 million, with the New Orleans Jazz. When he signed with the Jazz in 1976, per league rules at the time, the Lakers were to receive compensation for losing a veteran free agent. The Lakers complained to the league's Commissioner Larry O'Brien after losing Gail Goodrich , and O' Brien oversaw the compensation process where it was determined (well after the signing) that the compensation would be the regular first-round pick from the 1979 draft to Los Angeles (along with first-round picks in 1977 and 1978 and an additional second-round pick). The Jazz brass later claimed they wouldn’t have signed Goodrich if the compensatory cost was going to be that steep.
Blame Larry O'Brien for screwing us, not Barry Mendelson.

Saints got like 5 years of Pro Bowl running and blocking from Ricky and THEN got two first rounders for him.

Almost the entire board thought Griff hoodwinked Atlanta and stole Murray.
No way was I trading DD until after his 4th season to see what he became. I said we would regret that trade and caught shite for it.

This has been sensationalized because of “the whole draft” angle, but it was hardly a trade blunder at the time or in hindsight.
I read an article about 10 years ago about the players available with each pick the Saints could have gotten who were taken within 10 picks of each slot. Even with perfect drafting, it was arguable that Ricky was better.
