I'm sharing this in case anyone else is interested and also looking for feedback.

I'm a 50+ yr old golfer at a ~10 index with a driver swing speed of ~85-90 mph. My average driver carry is 220 with a 240 avg total. I started testing various mid-range golf balls all priced between $25 - $45 to find the best for me. I tried to stay at a compression rating between 70 & 80 and under $45.00. I have a simulator at home so I can see numbers that way and also test on the course.

These are the ones I've tested so far

Taylormade Tour Response - $42
Bridgestone E12 - $35
Callaway ERC Soft - $40
Wilson Triad - $40
Maxfli Tour S - $40

After testing all these balls on the sim and playing at least 3 rounds with each, I'm currently torn between the ERC and Triad.

The ERC is the longest off the tee by about 5 yards. It also produces slightly more greenside spin. '

The Triad seems to be by far the most accurate. My GIR goes up above 40% when I play this ball. Not quite as long off the tee. It also feels the best with putting. It seems to roll the truest.

Any feedback? Any others I should try?

SideNote: I'm also about to start testing the "Otto" flex which is finding driver shafts that emulate the autoflex without autoflex pricing.

I orderd an Evenflow Riptide CB 50G Senior flex and a Gallafoy Prolaunch Blue 45g in Ladies flex. Both of these are suposedly very close in performance to the Autoflex. I will try them as it and if necessary, tip them to stiffen them up slightly. They are both releatively cheap and at this point, I'll try anything to pick up 15-20 yds off the tee.

I personally like the top line Srixon offerings. The 2023 Srixon Z Stars are $40 a dozen. I play the XV because I liked them a little better than the regular Z stars. You just missed them having a buy 2 get 1 free deal on dozens, which obviously got the price lower than that. That should come back on Black Friday if you like them.

I think the Zstar is a 100 compression which would put it close to the ProV1 which is too hard for my swing speed.

The Qstar Tour looks good though 3 piece with 70 compression. May have to add that one to the list.

Thanks!

I havent played all of those but after playing the E-12 for a while I got a dozen of E-6 soft as a fathers day gift and to be honest, I cannot tell the difference at all.

The E-6 is not in that category so wouldn't bump it against the ERC necessary but for someoe looking for a step below this range, the E-6 is a great choice.

A good comp I found to the ERC was the Vice Pro. Sams had them, $48 for two dozen for a long time but they sold out after a fire sale and havent seem them that price since but I thought that was another ball in that range that performed well.

Just my two cents but this seems like a glowing review if I've ever seen one. Better feel, better accuracy, and better putting are hard to beat.

What do you do for swing speed/distance? I'd go with the more accurate ball & consider beefing up your speed/flexibility routine. And 240 is no slouch especially at 50+

I dove into this last year and bought a shaft fitting the parameters. A couple of injuries in a row have kept me from testing it.

It's 100% a flexibility issue at this point. Not as flexible as I used to be. I have been trying to force myself to stretch every morning and especially on days I know I'll be playing. I also have dealt with Tennis elbow in my lead arm for the past 5-6 months so that can affect it as well if it's flaring up.

I can't seem to turn my shoulders farther enough on my back swing anymore even if I lock out my trail leg which in and of it itself feels wrong. I can still produce more speed if I "jump off the ground" but that tends to be an uncontrollable swing.

which shaft did you buy? I'll post again after I test with them to see if I actually gain anything from them.

Fujikura Red Atmos in either L or Senior, I can't remember. It's just sitting in my hobby room waiting its turn.

The maxfli is realistically $30/dz max if you buy the 4 packs at the regular price. Great value if that's important to you

Not a ball I play, but TaylorMade Speed Soft is a ball I’ve also heard of being good for your type of game. Only $25 a dozen as well.

I’ve played some “foundlings.”

I thought it was better than Callaway Supersoft.

Easy to identify. Splatter is different.

I don’t believe the old conventional wisdom that slower swing speeds benefit from softer balls. The independent ball tests I’ve seen have shown that the higher the compression the higher the ball speed, which is the primary factor in distance. The difference isn’t huge, particularly at slow swing speeds, but it’s measurable. Mygolfspy link. Urethane covered higher compression balls also usually produce slightly higher launch and higher spin, traits which often benefit slower swing speeds even more than higher ones.

I would recommend finding an accurate launch monitor somewhere and trying different balls and seeing which one gives you the best results.

I play Titleist Velocity. I am typically 94-98 on swing speed, and they perform great for me. I used ProV1X before the Velocity.

I get pristine condition balls from lostgolfballs.com. With 20% off and free shipping with 7 or 8 dozen, the delivered price is slightly over $1 each per ball. It's a hard deal to beat for a ball that I really like a lot.

I was going to make a post about this -

I just ordered from them for the 1st time. Ordered 48 taylormade tour response in 'mint' (not pristine) condition. Of the 48, one had a pretty bad cut, and 5 others probably should have been graded a level lower than mint....but especially with the 20% off, felt like this was still a really, really good deal.

Pristine balls are new. I have a friend that plays Velocity that gets regular shipments directly from Titleist as a part of a loyalty program. He can't tell the difference and pays the same for 3 dozen that I pay for 7 dozen.

I have had issues with mint before, and they always make it right, so you should talk with a rep when you make your next purchase.

Srixon Q star tour

This is my new front runner. I played BC last Sat morning with the Qstar and had my best round I can remember there.

Was very straight off the tee and greenside spin was there to the point it took me a few holes to get used to. I was checking the ball up instead of releasing and leaving long puts.

Also tried the Evenflow Riptide CB in 50G A Flex. Didn't really notice any major differences. I hit it straight and roughly the same distance. I think I was 14/18 Fairways hit so the accuracy at least was there.

Golfworks hasn't shipped my prolaunch yet so haven't been able to test that one.

Great info, like others have said Lostgolfballs.com is my go to.. they always have “20%” off sales and free shipping on larger orders. Quick check if the website shows Mint Condition Triad $25.99, ERC Soft 360 Fade $32.99 they are sold out of the regular ERC Soft so those may be cheaper than the 360 Fade model, and Tour Response white, is $22.99. I’ll have to try the Wilson Triads based on your comments. Also, I’m very interested in your shaft comparisons. I have about the same Driver stats as you and recently I got fitted into a Callaway Elyte with the new Fuji White Velocore+ in Regular flex.
