Friend of mine moved into a condo and just bought a washer and dryer. Hooked up washer and dryer, and has dirty water going through the washing machine.

Any idea what causes this and how to fix?

Thanks.

I don’t know but a millionaire will soon be over to your house to check it out

If more young people would figure out the scam that is most college degrees they would go all in on the plumbing or electrical training route.

Did the condo sit for a while? How old is the water heater/softerner/anything else in the line?

Can they hook a garden hose to the water and run it to a sink?

I’m in my early 30s and went the plumbing route. I think a lot of young people these days too soft to be able to survive the trade life. You have to deal with manual work and extreme temperatures for prolonged periods. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you put in the work it pays off.

I feel the area I live in has an adequate amount of plumbers and electrician to service the community’s needs.

However, I don’t mind if the workforce increases 15%. Have them all chasing the same buck and lower my cost.

How long since the washing machine connection has been used?

Wonder if previous tenant had a washing machine. Likely just stagnant water in the line.

Hook the washing machine hose up to the hose connections and flush hot and cold individually into the washing machine drain connection at the wall (manually hold it so it doesn’t pop out). Flush until the water is clear. Repeat for hot side.

My son is 24 and has had his journeyman’s for 2 years now. I’m every bit as proud of him as I am my 28 y/o daughter who went to college and is an OT.

Turn the hose on. Turn the faucets on.

Let the water run for a while. Let the lines flow.

I didn’t even think about this. If there isn’t a sacrificial anode in the water heater and that water sat hot for significant time, it may be your source of rust.

Is there any other dirty water in the condo, particularly hot water?

And they are going to be very put out over it because their yacht was just ready to sail to Monaco and they had to get on their private jet to fly to catch a service call....its hard out here on a plumber....

If the washing machine has set for any amount of time and it is one without an agitator it could be soured/moldy/mildew water that never drains from the machine.

Some new machines come out the box rusty and have mold growing in them due to being tested and boxed up for months at a time.

Also if there was absolutely no mold/mildew in the machine then your water heater has rust / sediments in it. Try just doing a cold wash first. If only clean water then there you go.

Assuming it’s a rusty water heater, turn on all the hot faucets connected to the water heater. It will smell funky but run it till the water is cold. Wait for it to catch up. You may have to do it again a few times. Eventually it’ll be ok.

Go back and pour 1/2 gallon of bleach in that machine and run it on the cold water cycle. Just to clean out the obvious garbage in the machine.

I’m not a plumber but I’ve dealt with this numerous times. Good luck.
