I would say the best way to measure it is by national titles. LSU has 8 and USC has 12. However, unless USC gets back on the national stage (last title in 1998), I believe (looking through my purple and gold glasses) that we have supplanted them as the greatest. We are at the top. Who is going to come along and dethrone LSU?

Because, except for, pre-Omaha folks thinking that USC might be, LSU is the greatest college baseball program of all time.

Frankly, again, other than USC it isn't particularly close. TWENTY trips. EIGHT titles. In 40 years. That prior era? Yeah, USC, Arizona State, Texas are the old guard. All had an argument prior to, say, 1996 or so.

LSU's sustained success over 40 years dwarfs any team's accomplishments, except USC. Their 53 year run from 1948 to 2001 is the only thing in the conversation now.

He's always been a west coast homer. Maybe someone should remind him that SC hasn't won a title since 98 and the other 11 occurred before Ronald Reagan's presidency.

Furthermore, if they make it to Omaha next year it will be their first time to do so in 25 years.

That's like saying Minnesota is the greatest ever in CFB because of all the great teams they had in the 30's and 40's.

USC won a lot at a time when there were no more than a few viable programs. On Sat night, LSU was in a dogfight with Coastal fricking Carolina, a mid-major who boasts a couple of draft picks in their starting rotation and a slew of D1 caliber specialty relievers.

USC had to beat Delaware and Dartmouth out of the loser's bracket in 1970.

USC of yesteryear is quaint. LSU is a legitimate powerhouse in the sport.

It's drastically harder to win a title today than it was in the 60s and 70s.

hell, I'd even say it's harder today than when Skip won in 96 and 97. His first two, along with building the program, were the "hardest" IMO

In 1974 they alabama'd themselves into the tournament as the team selected from the Pac-8 despite finishing 11-7 in conference while Washington State and Oregon both had better records.

This actually isn't a bad comparison. It's the same concept. The sport didn't have the depth it has now when USC was making its run. It doesn't mean it doesn't count or that it's not impressive, but it's just a different era. The UCLA basketball run is similar.

Since 1991, the only other team that even has 3 is Oregon State. That's how hard it is to win in this era.

As we saw this year, the college baseball postseason is a meat grinder.
