I come to bury Coach Schnall, not to praise him.

Two words that define our program are "Own It."
You have to own everything that you do . . . without blame, without defending yourself, without excuses.
NCAA Rule 3-6-f Note 1 prohibits arguing balls, strikes, half swings, or hit-by-pitch situations:
quote:NCAA 3-6-f Note 1
NCAA 3-6-f Note 1: Balls, strikes, half swings or decisions about hit-by-pitch situations are not to be argued.
NCAA Rule 3-6-f Note 1 authorizes umpires to warn a coach who is arguing balls and strikes. The same rule requires the umpie to eject the coach if he continues to argue after being warned:
quote:NCAA 3-6-f Note 1
After a warning, any player or coach who continues to argue balls, strikes, half swings or a hit-by-pitch situation shall be ejected from the game.
Coach Schnall admits he heard a warning:
quote:Youtube Link
There's 25,000 people there, and I vaguely hear a warning.
Coach Schnall admits that he came out of the dugout and was clearly warned again:
quote:Youtube Link
So, when I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me. So, at that point, I can now hear him say he's issued a warning for arguing balls and strikes.
After admittedly being warned TWICE, Coach Schnall can only be ejected IF he continues to argue balls and strkes, which, of course, he did:
quote:Youtube Link
At that point, I said, "because you missed three at that point."
The umpire does not have discretion. The rules mandate that the umpire eject the coach. The rule does not say that the coach may be ejected from the game. To the contrary, the rule states that the coach shall be ejected from the game. NCAA 3-6-f Note 1
Why does Coach Schnall get ejected? Because he's a little man who felt disrespected.
quote:
I was an assistant for 24 years, and as an assistant, you’re almost treated like a second grade, second-level citizen and you can’t say a word. Now, as a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned.
I’m 48 years old. I shouldn’t get shooed by another grown man. When I walk out to find out what the warning is, a grown man shooed me.
To be more accurate, a grown man shooed Coach Schnall, and then he booted Coach Schnall, as mandated by the rules.
Will Coach Schnall every apologize for his behavior?

Who cares? We got natty #8 maaaaan!

That is a Coastal Issues not LSU. LSU is the champs and would be with or without his ejection.

The way the kids left the presser was grim. He let them down and wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a hefty amount of entries into the portal.

I’m sure he’ll read this and reflect on his actions.

He tried to intimidate and bully the umps right at the get go. The umps wouldn’t have any of it. He still won’t admit he was wrong.
His players for the most part imitate his behavior. Like Playground baseball punks.
He should be disciplined or let go by the university.

Dude showed his arse. AD should send him packing.

I laughed at that watching live too. Talked about accountability and not defending yourself then went on a rant about not deserving to get kicked out, not hearing the warnings, etc

Would not be surprised if coastal ever makes it back. No wonder he’s only been an assistant for so many years. He is as bad as a traveling ball coach.

All of this is wrong and colored by your fandom.
First- my team won and I’m damn happy about it but every time I think about that situation I get more pissed. So I’m going to lay out why it was an abomination and terrible job of umpiring a game.
TLDR: My conclusion -Angel Campos started the problem with a ticky tack warning, amplified the situation with his piss poor communication, and should never call another CWS game.
First off, let’s discuss how it got started. Angel Campos lit off this whole fuse himself when he issued the first warning. The strike zone was bad in the 1st and the pitch that set everything off was a terrible call. It was both high and inside. So much so that everyone was shocked it was a strike. That’s why they asked for clarification on the count.( It’s common for coaches to miss the ball/ strike indication on steal plays as focus shifts to the runner). At that, the first base coach walks forward a few steps and says something about the call as he’s facing the infield and putting his hands on his knees to prepare for the next pitch. He wasn’t causing a scene or showing up the umpire. (Umpires are the only officials in major sports who seem to be affected so deeply by criticism.)
When he stepped out, called time, and warned the first base coach a fuse was lit that could not be stopped. At that moment, there was only 1 person who could keep the game from spiraling- Angel Campos.
That’s when he throws gas onto the lit fuse. You just warned an assistant coach- and therefore the entire team in the first inning. That’s a big deal. As mentioned earlier, you did so when it wasn’t t even obvious that anyone was arguing with you. You just chose to whip it out and start off the dick measuring contest right here and now. The head coach in that situation is well within his rights to ask the umpire for what they are being warned, and to receive a professional explanation. A good umpire, intent on maintaining control, trust, and rapport, will tell the coach what the issue is. A good coach will make sure it doesn’t happen again while also subtly getting his point across. In fact, good umpires will tell you “it’s my job to keep you in the game, it’s your job to keep your assistant’s in the game”. They do so by communicating. Angel chose to wave off the coach’s inquiry. Last chance to diffuse probably gone.
Instead, he chooses to wave him off again and point and yell at him. Fuse end reached bomb goes off.
From there he scurries away from Schnall forcing Schnall to chase after him. Then the Barney Fife clown runs in and trips on his partner, gets up and issues a 2 game suspension for warning. Now the bomb has hit a cache of stored weapons! At that moment the argument shifts from the quick hook of the plate umpire to head coach having to defend himself from a 2 game suspension for “bumping”.
So now Angel and crew have created a situation where the coach is not leaving the field without arguing 2 valid points (both that he’s right on) and they can justify “prolonged” arguing.
This was atrocious officiating all the way around. Angel started it off with bad calls, escalated it once with a quick and unnecessary warning, then again with a refusal to communicate with the only person he demands communication with (HC), and again with a quick ejection that he baited. The crew further exacerbates the situation with failed gymnastics routine and then has the audacity to whine that the coach was to excessive.
At the end of the day be careful what you wish for. Like Clemson last year, Coastal this year, and 2 other teams in the previous 2 seasons, your team’s turn will come too If we do t fix the umpiring issue in this game

In the end that's irrelevant. What Schnall continued to do after being warned takes precedent over balls and strikes. LSU had plenty of bad calls in Omaha, but you never saw CJJ completely become unglued and try to intimidate an Umpire. Schnall had a reputation, and every Umpire there knew about it.

How you do anything is how you do everything.
Again, I do like his energy, but I hate his attitude. Jay Johnson is head-and-shoulders better in every meaningful way.

That would have been appropriate, but, NOPE: the AD/University support him:
quote:
"The ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and assistant coach Matt Schilling in the bottom of the first inning drastically altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team,” Miller’s statement reads. “These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run.
“This is not about a single call – it’s about process and professionalism. In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, out program and its student-athletes deserved better. The NCAA must re-evaluate how it trains, assigns and review umpires in championship environments.
Their tune may change if players hit the portal.

The difference is Jay plays within the rules. That’s why he’s the best in the game. He could have argued what was a much more flagrant screw up by the refs (Dickinson hbp) in the first game but he knew keeping his composure was more important. The good news for coastal fans is they can lay their head in the pillow at night knowing that situation had absolutely no bearing on their chances to win the championship. LSU was the better team by a very large margin and would have won that series 9/10 times.
