Best riding lawnmower for 6 acres

A friend with an outdoor construction company said to go commercial because they are better and retain resale value better.
Any recommendations? Should I look into a tractor that can attach a mower and other useful things?
Need zero turn

before I gave it to the lawn guy I cut 6 acres of Bahia with a 72” scag turf tiger. It was a badass machine. The trade off is always deck size vs engine HP. If you are constrained one way or another choose engine HP
There are many others to choose from but the scag was rock solid and would mow anything

This is so played out and archaic. Back in the early 2000s, sure. The “residential” mowers were not made the same and had stamped decks, weak frames, and weaker engines.
This is just not the case anymore. Some might call them “Prosumer” models or a premium residential machine.
Any high quality, upper end residential machine will be fine. As mentioned, deck size vs hp becomes important, as well as determining storage/access limitations.
Hustler, Scag, Bad Boy, Gravely, etc. all have higher end residential mowers with heavy wall fabricated decks, good engines, and quality transmissions.
I use a 52” Gravely HD for 4 acres. I’m looking to go for a 60” maybe in a season or two, but I’ve used Gravely and Hustlers with no issues. Scag is great, but you pay a premium for the brand.
I would NOT consider a used commercial machine. Yes, they typically last much longer. But they are priced accordingly and you don’t really get much more for that money. You could buy multiple residential mowers for a similar expense.
Also, a compact tractor with a belly mower is an option, but they are typically much slower and larger. However, tractors on multiple acres come in handy all the time. I have a 35 hp tractor with front end loader and a few implements and it came in handy all the time.

Commercial > Residential 8 days a week

Get 2 -3 luba 2's. 2 will give you a complete cut every 6 days, 3 will give you a complete cut every 4 days over an entire 6 acres.
Will probably be cheaper, and after set up you might have to go un stick it occasionally, but no more cutting grass weekly/biweekly.

Six damn acres and I’m getting a small tractor. We had about 4 acres that we mowed when I was a kid. It took forever on a rider. Ruined the weekend. Went to a quality mower on a tractor and made it much more bearable.

If you use a small tractor with 6 ft or smaller bush hog, 72 " zero turn faster. Now 75 HP or up tractor with cab and 10 ft
Of course that is overkill

I bush hog around 15-20ish acres at my place.
I have a 7ft bush hog and a 75 hp tractor. It’s fairly slow for me because of the hilly terrain. I’m running in B 2nd gear (gears are abc and 4 gears in each of those).
A zero turn is much faster. And much cheaper.
Tractors are very expensive and a 10ft bush hog is $10k and up.

I am not certain on your terrain but I have a Scag Tiger cat 2 for my 4+ acres. Things a beast!

Get the one with the better seat! I went with “residential” and it does well, but it doesn’t have the commercial seat. Gets a little rough unless it is a golf course.

Is it 6 acres of lush level lawn or six acres of country yard with holes, dips, ant piles, pine cones limbs etc?
If the later get something commercial quality or get good at fixing crap, ask me how I know
JD z930m has done well for us with 5 + country acres
Tractor with a finish mower will be much slower , definitely go with a zero turn

As long as it doesn't come from a big box store you should be ok.
Still rocking a 1996 Deere 455 w60" deck. Recently scored a model 40 FEL

I cut about the same. Hills, rocks, very uneven rough terrain.
I have a 60" bad boy avenger. 3 years going strong with only routine maintenance.

The simple answer is, buy the most horsepower with the biggest deck that meets your budget.
Commercial will last longer, and like others have stated, prioritize horsepower over deck size.

My BIL cut his 7 acres with his old Ford tractor and a Woods finish mower for 25 years. Made the switch to a 60" zero turn a couple years ago. Says its way faster.
They have a lot of obstacles and trees though. If its just an open field, maybe tractor can hang or beat a ZT.

I don’t know if I got a lemon or what, but I had a John Deere 54” ZTR and I swear a broke a belt every other cut. I have 3 acres and had to keep belts on hand just in case. I ended up giving it to my son in law for his camp and got a Bad Boy about 4 years ago. Have had zero issues with this mower and still has the original belt.
