Is this Kenner bay boat a fair deal?

Hey folks — looking at a 1993 Kenner 21.5’ bay boat with a 2004 Yamaha 150 2-stroke. Seller says it’s fully redone, very clean, and the ECU shows 14 hours (but obviously it has more - indicating they must have had to replace it). Compression is "around 110" across the board. Looks great in pics, but wanted to get some second opinions on the price.

Pros:

21.5’ Kenner hull — redone, looks clean
150 Yamaha 2-stroke — starts and runs
Trailer included
Nice layout for inshore fishing

Cons:

Hull is 32 years old
Engine is 21 years old, unknown hours
Compression is low-normal (110ish)
ECU was replaced — no real hour count

Would you say this setup is worth $10K, or is that high for the age/unknowns? Appreciate any thoughts from those more experienced with older bay boats and Yamahas

14 hours on a 21 year old motor? That’s too low, it’s never been run. That’s 40 mins of use a year.

Would that make me run away? No. I don’t think it’s a bad price, just a trailer for a 22 ft boat is going to be $5k or so new I’d assume (no idea but it’s not cheap). A brand new 150 is going to be $10k.

The seller indicated that the "he's sure that the 14 hours is incorrect". He is selling on behalf of his dad and doesn't know details yet. I will confirm, but I am assuming the ECU had to be replaced for some reason so the motor hour counter was reset. Essentially the motor is unknown hours, which is a pretty big risk.

I have the same motor. Solid if that helps any.
I’d guess this boat may doing the lower 40smph wise. Mine is on a 19 and will do 52.

Its worth $10k. Id budget another $10k for shite youll have to fix in the first year. My only concern would be wood rod in the deck or transom.

I've never seen a navigation light attached to an outboard.

I don't think you could do better for $10k. I even sort of want it but trying to take a break from a boat.

Great hull. Its worth 10k if its all solid and doesn't have holes drilled everywhere, trailer is good, engine is reliable, etc. You aren't getting any flavor of 21' bare hull for $10k anymore and since thats a wood core boat, anything can be repaired reasonably cheaply. A full blown well done transom job is about $4,500 right now.

Gas tank under the console is awful. Doesn't have a trolling motor which means doesn't have trolling motor batteries.

I'd say it's a good deal as long as you go into knowing that motor is a ticking time bomb. It may run another thousand hours and may run 10 hours before it blows, but rest assured it will blow. At that price though it's perfect for 4 stroke repower.

yes! Solid hull. Look for cracks along transom. That's their weak spot. Looks clean though!

I'd repower.

I bought a boat with one. I removed it and covered the hole it with a Yamaha decal.

Curious as to where you're buying a new 150 for 10k?

Really??
Most here (LC) have cowling all around lights.
OP, where is boat located and will they make sale contingent on a survey?
Most “good glass guys” can sound the transom and hull with a mallet to determine condition. Other than that it’s a solid buy that will kill plenty of fish.??

When was ECU replaced? Might give you and Idea about how many if use was similar throughout. I bought a 96 Skeeter Bass boat with 200EFI mercury for same price. Put 4K in it and if I get 5 years out of that Motor I’m way ahead. If that hull is sound I’d do it.

What does redone mean? Like floor and transom?

I had one of those, it was a good boat, the scuppers stay underwater and it doesnt drain very well. Downshift is right, the gas tank console sucks but you can always look down and kick it when you dont know how much gas you have. It rides pretty good for a light 21' boat which isnt that great. but its pretty quick with a 150 and its incredibly fuel efficient.

How good of a deal that is completely depends on the motor and what was redone. If the motor checks out and the floor and transom are solid, thats a good deal. That is, if it fits your needs.

I love those old Kenners!

Only worry would be making sure stringers, floor, and transom are rock solid.

Also check trailer axles etc real well.

It also doesn't have a trolling motor.

I'd hit him at $7500 cash money after inspecting it, use the lack of trolling motor, electronics, possible unknown hours as a bargaining chip. If he negotiates to anything below 9500$ i would say its a great deal.

Major buyers market right now. Lots of good rigs have been on the market quite a while.
