Who’s the better Starship Captain: Kirk or Picard?

Picard had his moments - and certainly more "admiral" material and diplomat than (real) Kirk. But, (real) Kirk was a better guy in a fight or uncertain situations.
You want Kirk in command if the $hit hits the fan.

Picard is the better officer, but Kirk is better take action and arse kicker. I’ll give it to Kirk.

I would actually take Janeway, she was Picard until fricked with and then turned into Kirk. Women are fine until they're crazy.

Kirk, by a country mile... but I will admit that some series are better than others. Original Star Trek gets the nod for being first... but I enjoyed most of the others as well.

The Federation was more of a wild west type frontier when Kirk was exploring beyond the boundaries of the Federation at at time when the Prime Directive was not as well defined. Picard was more of the diplomat but certain had a personal code the he sails by. Picard was right for his time and Kirk was right for his time.
That being said, Sisko was the most rounded and "real" Captain. The more I rewatch DS9 the more I like Like Sisko the best.

Depends on the situation.
Diplomacy with a neutral party? Picard
Diplomacy with an aggressive party? Kirk
Combat? Kirk
Less HR headaches? Picard
If you're the Chief Medical Officer? Picard. I imagine Kirk had to get a LOT of shots.

He put on Captain at the season finale of S3. IMO, season's 4-7 when he was a Captain with the Defiant was some of the best Star Trek stories across the board. DS9 still holds up after 20+ years. He did have a good stretch as a Commander, but he was actually a Captain on network TV longer that Kirk
