BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - That sweltering southern heat is returning, and spending some time soaking in the pool is a great way to cool off.
Unfortunately, lifeguard shortages have one of Baton Rouge’s most enjoyable summer attractions sitting empty.

Friday’s event at the park begins at 6 p.m. with the ribbon cutting, followed by a Late Night Hype event from 7 to 10 p.m. Late Night Hype will include late swim hours, a DJ, and inflatables.

I hear you meet the most interesting people at Industriplex park.
BREC sure shits the bed a lot for an organization with such a generous budget.

Brec has a 600 million dollar surplus meaning that if they refunded the money, every taxpayer in Baton Rouge would get a check for 1 million dollars

What's the new park?

quote:
This park is located in the mid-west part of East Baton Rouge Parish. Howell Community Park serves a larger geographic area than a neighborhood park and is designed to engage the entire family for a whole day. Higher levels of maintenance, security, and recreational opportunities are offered at community parks. This is one of BREC's oldest parks.
ETA: Looks like they did some improvements at Howell Park and built a swimming pool for North BR Residents.
Swimming pool - one lifeguard
Water park - many lifeguards

If you are of the demographic that has a kid with the ability to swim well enough to qualify to be hired as a lifeguard, would you want that kid dealing with the demographic that pays $12 to drop their kids for 8 hours of baby sitting at a city run waterpark?

As a terrible golfer with no money i used to love playing golf there. Not crowded. Cheap to play
Still pissed they closed it

So there are only 600 taxpayers?

It was a tricky little layout, but they didn’t keep it up.
We played baseball there also. Legion and High School.

I hated that course with it's concrete ditch on every hole.

It might have years ago. Many parks filled in their pool with segregation in the 60's.
BREC closed all pools indefinitely in May of 1964, two days before a court ruling on segregation.
City Park had a pool at one time.

quote:
Ultimately refiled and ruled on by U.S. District Court on May 18, 1964, the ruling stated that there was, “There is no legal obligation or duty on the part of the City-Parish to provide or operate recreational facilities, but if they do, they cannot provide and maintain them on a racially segregated basis.”
BREC closed City Park and 9 other public pools in the area shortly after the resolution of the case, citing declining revenues and damage caused by an Alaskan earthquake. While other facilities eventually restarted operation in the following few years, City Park Pool never reopened. Left to stagnate, it was finally filled in 1990.
I know the Gus Young pool was filled in about 10 years ago.

Brooks Park was one of the first pools to allow blacks to swim.

And the old troll that would walk those ditches collecting the lost balls. He had a good collection of them.

It did. As late as the early to mid seventies for sure.

They built a nice new pool at Howell Park?! They can't swim!

Wow. I always wondered why other cities had community pools and BR did not. Had no idea they were closed down.
