I have been putting in for the once in a lifetime Wichita Mtns elk hunts for the last 7 years. Found out this evening I was fortunate enough to draw a cow tag for February 2026. I somehow added the cow hunt code to my application without realizing it and drew. I am excited to be able to go on my first elk hunt but also am kinda bummed I won't be able to shoot a bull or ever apply for the hunt again! Either way, I plan on having a great time!

Pretty awesome. I duck hunt there annually. Love it out there. Awesome. Always thought about mixing in a deer hunt, but elk in the Wichita's damn son, that's where its at.

Good luck and enjoy your trip this coming season.

They got ducks in the mountains?

Also to the OP, big congratulations, are you an OK resident?

Good luck. Beautiful area out there.

I archery hunt Ft Sill for elk every fall and it's always a good time.

They got mountains in OK? Seriously, do they? Never stepped foot in the state. Guess they're in the NE part of the state?

Haha. No baw. SW. And some in the SE. The Wichitas are SW, the Ouchitas/Kiamichis in the SE.

I might be buying a hunting parcel in the Kiamichis for tax purposes--1031 swap.

Who do you hunt with there?

I'm looking for a new place to go after several bad years in Stuttgart.

These are very rare hunts right? I'm sure the odds of drawing as a non resident for a bull tag are worse than the normally lottery? What is the percentage of bull tags that fill them? Some of those hunts are super high but some are super low

It's a once in a lifetime tag. Meaning once you draw the tag, bull or cow, you can never draw again. That being said, the odds to draw a cow tag is about 60% and a bull is about .001% last time I checked.

Yep I completely understood that. Is it really 60% for a cow tag? What are the success rates of that? If its 60% draw I may strongly look into that.

Some of these states the bulls are often times very good size, I'm not sure if that's always the case? Holding out on 0.001% for a 300 inch 6x6 is one thing but if its usually something like a 4x5 I personally think just hunting a cow is great. Fun out of state meat hunts like cow elk hunts are underated imo. Great eating and its more hunting to the core, and not just trophy hunting.

I don't know the odds, but I know some residents have been putting in for over 30 years on the bull hunts and still havent drawn. I started thinking about it and it was probably a good thing. I may would have never drawn a bull tag. Now I can have a great hunt and hopefully bring home some delicious meat then focus on other states I've been building points.

I'd call it more like aggressive hills than mountains

OP, that's pretty cool and I didn't realize they offered hunts. Many years back we used to travel to Elgin OK a few times a year to buy cattle and would always stay in Lawton. I remember seeing the elk herds grazing near Ft. Sill many times on our trips, I was always surprised they had elk in Oklahoma. Congrats on the draw and good luck.
