For those that have followed them, what can we expect in WVU this weekend?

Don’t know to much about them. Anyone have any insight?

Strengths and weaknesses?

LSU is -400 to advance to Omaha, so Vegas obviously thinks we have a major advantage… biggest one of the weekend for any host actually.

We need to win this series. The fate of every couch in Morgantown depends on it

I believe they said last night that their 44 wins this year is the most in program history

I just remember before the Regionals hearing several radio types saying "watch out for West Virginia".

They must have been playing great baseball coming in to the tournament. There are a few WV fans that post here so I am sure they will be along shortly

They are a good hitting team with a near elite Friday night guy. I don’t think they have much pitching depth, so there are opportunities against the bullpen.

Who knows though. No one could watch LR or look at their stats and predict they’d be competitive. Cano was a sub .240 hitter with limited production before this weekend.

They have a pitcher number 67 is Eyanson like, based on the two times I saw him. Small sample size take it for what it’s worth.

WV win over Clemson was its only win against a top 25 RPI team all season. Its toughest opponents during the season:

Arizona - went 1-3
Kansas - 0-3
Kansas State - 1-2

Small ball. Zero power. Bunch of stolen bases. Terrible, terrible defense. Pretty good #1 starter, nothing after that.

Should cruise 2-0 next weekend.

Good front line pitching, decent hitters, plays really well away from their home stadium (24-5), definitely can't take them for granted or we'll be SOL.

Fortunately, Anderson and Eyanson are on out team and hopefully we can win the first two games.

My wife is from Charleston and if I have to listen to my inbred in-laws crow about beating LSU in baseball over the Fourth I might blow my brains out. The whole fam went to WVU other than her.

Her brother told me "we have a really good offense, but our bullpen is terrible" ... take that for what it's worth because that fanbase knows very little about baseball. Being good at CBB is very new to them.

ETA: Now that I think about it, our fanbase doesn't seem to know much about baseball either.

I haven't watched them but just looking them up they have a very good road record (24-5) but haven't played many great teams on the road. Kansas state was the best team they played on the road and they lost 2/3. Of course they did also just beat clemson on the road too. Looks like they have 2 defined starters and one go to reliever that they used in every game this weekend. They've got a lot of pitchers with a lot of innings without great stats. The front line guys might be pretty good though

They lost 6 of their last 7 regular season games and then went 1-1 in the big 12 tourney. I think they were more referring to the fact that clemson seems to always struggle in the postseason. Something to remember is that WVU lost to UNC in the supers last year after upsetting a regional host so they do have experience in this situation

Actually quite the opposite. They had a great start and middle of the year then fell off. From May 6th to the end of the regular season they were 2-7

Well, apparently our RPI dropped after winning the regional so Jay better get the team ready or they won’t advance.

It seems that RPI is still critically important in terms of power rankings and matchups per a very intelligent poster in another thread

Now that is funny! Well done! Not sure how old you are, and don’t want to hijack this thread, but, pre-Skip Bertman our fanbase knew even less…..

I watched all their regional games. The #1 thing that comes to mind when watching them is they just grind. Up or down they literally make life Hell.

They were down 3-0 against Kentucky bottom 5th, came back and walked them off bottom 9

Against Clemson they were tied 5-5 and put up a 4 spot in the top of the 9th to win

To close out the regional, they were down 12-7 bottom 8 and scored 6 runs to win 13-12.

This will be a battle

I did a little research this morning. They won a pretty good big 12 conference outright. 44-14, 19-9 in league play and 24-5 on the road. They swept a decent cincy team 4-0 and swept a good UCF squad 3-0, but lost series to kansas state, kansas, and arizona who were all regional teams.

Team BA is .299 which i think was 3rd in their league, but slugging % and homers were in the bottom 5. Team ERA is 4.35 which was 2nd in their league.

So it seems like they're an average to below average hitting team with good pitching. LSU should win but this wont be a layup like some may think. They're a pretty good squad
