Are there any worse haters than music fans?

I’m guilty as well.
But every post about a musician or band, whether here, Facebook, Instagram, etc, is almost immediately followed by something negative.
“He’s not as good as xyz”
“They suck now”
“He’s good, but xyz is better”
Is it because we see music as a sport, and want to root for “our team” so we see other musicians as the opposing team?
Rather than as art to enjoy?

Alice in Chains is weirdly overrated on this board.

If you’re serious about treating music as art to enjoy, I urge you to remove commercial success from your list of criteria that make one musician “better” than another. Three nearly unknown guitar players come to mind who are still considered greats by their colleagues years after their deaths in the ‘80s and ‘90s: Lenny Breau (homicide age 43), Danny Gatton (suicide age 49), and O’Dell Martin (single-car accident age 45).
I had the privilege of working with O’Dell and continue to be amazed by his musicianship. Here’s a compilation of some rare recordings.

I agree and I already do this.

I think I'm one of the few that like their post-Layne stuff just as much as the 90s albums.

Who is the #1 band of all time?
What are your top 10 Canadian Polka albums of the '80s?
Who wins between the Hansen Bros & the Osmond Bros?
This is a competition. Please, wagering.
All good Americans love a winner & will not tolerate a loser.

I give people more grace for their musical choices now that I am older. I have come to enjoy some bands and musical genres that I used to hate. I think it primarily stems from the fact that people haven’t delved into the music that they don’t like and really listened to a variety of songs from the artist. I also think that the majority of people simply gravitate towards the musical genres that they liked growing up mainly due to nostalgia. I make two exceptions for contemporary country music and hip hop. By and large they both suck. That’s an objective fact.

I openly judge people all the time by their music choices, can’t help it.
Mostly for crap like this

Same.
Music is subjective.
A song might take you back to a night with your buddies in high school.
Other people like to get high and listen to weird chord changes. It’s whatever you like.

Popularity and quality do not always go hand in hand

People want to thin’ that whatever they have chosen or are drawn to is “the best”. Be it music, sports, politics etc. on s9me level, if what they like is “the best” it makes them feel superior. This is likely tied to the Selfish gene.
They seek out approval of their choices from others. And if someone they deem to be “an expert” or “respected in their field” likes what they like, that validates their choices and reaffirms the above.
“Guilty pleasures” are sort of an inverted offshoot of this. “I know I’m not supposed to like it but I do”.

It’s wild recalling how if Metallica were in contention for an award back in the day, I’d tune in and root for them like I was watching a fricking football game. I hated Megadeth for no reason other than I thought I was supposed to.

I went to an open mic yesterday and my party and I clapped after each performer like it was the greatest rendition of the songs ever.
Perhaps they knew they had plenty of room for improvement but they appreciated the acknowledgement anyway.
