American Gangster or Goodfellas

I’m guessing I’m gonna get unanimous Goodfellas
But the difference and similarities between the two are both very good viewpoints.
Difference: Goodfellas is all wise guys, you don’t see any of the other side on who’s trying to bring Henry and the boys down. Gangster does an amazing job of splitting the difference between Richie and Frank and their journeys to the top and bottom
Similarities: Both show the rise of a man in the criminal world with flash forwards. Ultimately Frank is a bigger dog than Henry

Anyone who doesnt pick Goodfellas has reasons beyond the actual movies themselves. Goodfellas is a masterpiece.

Same. Goodfellas is great but a little too campy at times. American Gangster feels real and gritty the whole movie.

Both are outstanding films that I have watched multiple times and own on Bluray. I have showed many ex girlfriends and friends these films and broken down to them what I like about them philosophically, as well as life lessons to be learned from them. Both films, contain excellent writing, acting, direction, and music. However, Goodfellas is almost in the ultimate tier of film excellence all by itself.

Goodfellas, but I rewatched American Gangster and that is a great movie. My one complaint is I wish it was longer. I would love to know what was involved in Frank setting up the heroin connection in Thailand. Like how does a guy in Harlem in the late 60s get that close to people who are producing that much weight - there are language barriers, cultural barriers, it was tougher to travel overseas.

This isn't even close by any stretch of the imagination.
American Gangster isn't even in my top 10 in the gangster genre.

I didn't even like American Gangster. Waste of two iconic actors. Donnie Brasco is better

This is not even close. Goodfellas is a story driven gangster movie with good actors. American Gangster is two good actors in a gangster movie. Only two Gangster movies beat Goodfellas and that is The Godfather one and two. Then its Goodfellas and Scarface. Heck I like Donnie Brasco more than American Gangster. That is a better argument because those are in the same area in the scope of things.

I don't know I can make an argument that Godfather II is better than I. I like the 2 story lines in that movie, plus all the Cuba stuff. Its close though.

The tension between Denzel and Russell Crowe make AG pretty damned entertaining…
