Are you good with going in a restaurant right before it’s scheduled to close?

I can’t do it….I’ve got a friend who will waltz into Olive Garden for example, with his family of four, at 9:50, knowing they close at 10:00. He tried that shite at our local Mexican restuarant in our town and they refused to serve him. He was pissed. Isn’t there some kind of unwritten rule about this? If not there should be.

Who is to say they didn’t put pee pee in the food out of retaliation?

Having served and bartended for a long time when I was younger I don't do it. I didn't mind working the closing shifts but it was more because the type of clientele that would do it were the ungrateful types if you catch my drift

Almost like they purposely came in knowing we were about to close and had a skeleton crew in the kitchen, and already pre planned to bitch and get free comps

I’d never do it but I’d assume if open till 10 means the front open till 10 and the employees are on clock to 11 or 12 for this very reason. If not then sign should say open till 9.

I've unfortunately had to do this on a few work trips. Late flights etc. I always apologize, ask if they already cleaned the kitchen and if not, what's the quickest thing they can make, or if someone didn't pick up a to go order.

Most places are pretty cool, and I always tip heavy in cash and tell them to make sure the cooks get a piece. I also make sure it's to go.

You’d be assuming wrong. It means customers out at closing time so the employees can clean up and get out by 11:00 or so. If you come in at 9:50, it’s impossible to order, cook the food, eat it, and be out by closing time (10:00)

I agree 100% with you but why not put closing time earlier then?

If I see a sign that says open 10am-10pm, I’d expect same service at 9.59pm as I would get at 5pm.

You are being unreasonable. It’s called common sense.

Your friend sounds like a douchebag with no respect for others or self awareness.

If it’s a reservation, sure. If it’s just a normal restaurant, I try not to go if it’s 45 min before close. Fast food, sure.

I have doubts that a reservation can be made less than an hour before closing.

If a business wants to deny service at a certain time, that's on them. I do not know if it makes financial sense to serve a few people that walk in late, but I imagine they would deny patrons if they could afford to.

Can you show up minutes before closing just becsuse you can? Yes. Are you a douche for doing so? Yes. These can exist together.

Absolutely not. One hour before close is my cuttoff. I've done my tour of duty at restaurants and never understood how people can be comfortable sitting in a restaurant after close (even after they're done eating...absolutely disrespectful).

Another factor is that the kitchen has begun to break down and clean the line, which involves bleach and other chemicals. From my experience the most problematic dishes to come from a kitchen are the first and last ones of service.

Only in times of desperation, make sure you order something that's easy to prepare, and add a beer to the tab for each kitchen staff member that had a hand in preparing your meal.

I worked at a place where the owner would walk in with his family or his wife would show up with her bimbo freinds 15-20 minutes before closing. They would apologize and always make the excuse that they thought we closed 1hr later than the time they arrived. It was usually on a slow night so we probably served our last meal 30 or so minutes before they arrived and were already a couple beers in, breaking down the kitchen and cleaning equipment.

They would take forever to order and they would order 3 courses, taking their time to eat. This happened about once every 4-6 weeks. If I was still there when they came in, I would send most of the staff home after they put their order in.

There was one occasion where I wasn't there that I heard through anonymous sources that they fricked with their food. But I can't corroborate that story.

When I was in HS/college I worked at Pizza Hut, and there was one family of 8-10 Indians (red dot) who would come in on Sunday nights between 9:30-9:55 (we closed at 10). We locked the doors one time and said we weren't taking any more customers and he called the district manager and complained. They'd always order thin n' crispy onion & jalapeno pizzas, well done. Used to drive me crazy.
