Paywall but first article is free. Lots of places I’ve never heard of, but I don’t live in Texas anymore. Franklin and Snows no longer in tope 10. Discuss.
For convenience, top 10:
10. Evie Mae’s - Wolfforth
9. Truth - Houston
8. LaVaca BBQ - port LaVaca
7. Dayne’s - Aledo
6. Interstellar - Austin
5. GW’s BBQ - San Juan
4. Redbird BBQ - Port Neches
3. Goldee’s - FW
2. Leroy and Lewis - Austin
1. Burnt Bean Co. - Seguin

Has Franklin's fallen off or is it just letting other restaurants get a run?
Posted on 5/27/25 at 9:29 am to LSUZombie
I think a little bit of both. Well maybe not fallen off but a bunch of newer places are doing a lot of creative stuff that can’t be found at Franklin. Vaughn is putting a lot of stock in other offerings beyond the big 3 of brisket, sausage and ribs. Franklin does those things well but doesn’t really stray beyond it.
At the same time I think also they are making a conscious choice at TM to give the spotlight to other places, just to mix it up. It wouldn’t be as interesting if it was the same 10 places every year but it’s still a little disingenuous to me imo. It’s kind of like the movie lists that suddenly realize after 50 years that Vertigo is now the best movie ever, not Citizen Kane.

been to about half, Leroy & Lewis was unreal
still love Truth as the best in Houston
Interstellar's pork belly burnt ends are legit and worthy of the hype
i heard redbird's offerings are completely legit, need to head out there soon

Haven't been to any on the top 10, but I saw Reese Bros in San Antonio made the list (not sure what their ranking is)... That is some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Are the top 10 places noticeably better than a place like Reese Bros to the untrained palate?

I've eaten at LaVaca before but it wasn't memorable. Maybe they've improved?

They did a great job with the list, lots of friends made top 50 and lots made top 100. Some surprises along the way, but all in all I agreed mostly.

Truth is good but Corkscrew is better imo.

4. Redbird BBQ - Port Neches
Absolutely fantastic. I eat there regularly when I am in Beaumont/Lumberton

Thanks for sharing! I love cooking BBQ at home but man I can't imagine waiting in a line for it

According to the TD Lifestyle Correspondent:
Truth partly owned by Johnny Carrabba and pays for that spot. Also Truth has everything made in a Carrabbas commissary kitchen. They slow service to keep a line out the door. Pit Room is better.
ETA: added "partly" owned for accuracy.

No, once the best brisket is sourced and smoked properly there’s only so much greatness to achieve. At least in and around Austin, there are so many great options that waiting in a line is ridiculous…unless it’s just a lunch rush.
I can’t comment on any except for Interstellar and LeRoy & Lewis but they are innovating into new flavors and different meat options. What they do is great but it’s different than old school TX BBQ.
Interstellar was first a sandwich place before they changed lanes. A location is still open at the Austin airport called the Noble Pig. I haven’t tried the airport location.

Truth owned by Johnny Carrabba
The owner is named Leo. Also, truth is lightyears better that the Pit Room.

I’ve eaten at about half of those spots and they are exceptional, but Franklin’s is still in a league of its own, I don’t know what they put in that meat, but it’s like crack
FYI, Texas monthly magazine is owned by the same family who owns Enterprise Products… North America’s largest midstream oil/gas/products company. The articles in the magazine are influenced by the personal opinions of a handful of people so I would take rankings with a grain of salt.

I tried Cattleack in Dallas a few months back and thought it was incredible. Thought better than Truth, but Top 10 in Texas is probably splitting hairs.

Cattleact was top 10, maybe top 5, a few years back. The rankings are pretty arbitrary but the list is still a great resource and Vaughn is a good food writer.

Just went to Truth on Saturday…fantastic as usual. Sorry to see Tejas and Feges fall off the top-50 but there’s just so much competition.
