Why does LSU not recognize Memorial Day as an employee holiday?

Pretty much what the topics asks… my wife (no pics) works at LSU and every year when Memorial Day comes around it baffles my mind that LSU does not give them the day off.

Anyone have the history on this?

Is this not one of the 18 or so paid holidays?

Because there are 14 paid holidays, which includes the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s.

They took away Memorial Day and gave them Juneteenth. It's LSU's woke way of saying black people are more important than veterans

At the LSU campuses that don't get a paid holiday for Mardi Gras, they get one for Memorial Day.

They all also get Good Friday as a paid holiday, which most workplaces don't.

It’s not. I agree they get a lot and thus why I’m always shocked when it comes around.

Seems to me that Memorial Day is one of the most important ones for us to remember and observe.

Most places that do Mardi Gras are simply replacing Presidents' Day.

It's the give and take so we can have a nice end of the year break.

LSU still does the Memorial Day celebration on the parade grounds every year
I think that’s part of the reason they stay open
They also have summer intersession classes during this time

They get an extended Xmas break between semesters where entire campus shuts down

No telling what the average blood alcohol content was for drivers on I-10 between NO and BR on Fat Tuesday evening in the 1980s. Couldn’t miss that Wednesday morning class!

Memorial Day originated as a remembrance of the Union's sacrifice in their victory over the Confederacy... so it's not surprising that LSU doesn't observe it.

ETA: The above is true.. but it's still bullshite because it's now a federal holiday and honors all fallen veterans.

Ok well that adds some context, but it is a state recognized holiday currently

Not sure if serious or not, but Juneteenth is not a paid holiday at LSU.
