President Donald Trump’s "one big, beautiful bill" survived a key hurdle in the House of Representatives on Sunday night, putting it one step closer to a chamber-wide vote later this week.
Lawmakers on the House Budget Committee were summoned back to Washington for a 10 p.m. meeting to vote on advancing the legislation, which passed the panel in a nearly party-line vote.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., made a surprise appearance at the committee room shortly before the vote began, telling reporters, "We think this is going to go well tonight. We're about to find out."
He said there would likely be "minor modifications" to the final bill.

It comes after a rebellion by four conservative House Freedom Caucus members on the committee blocked the bill from advancing on Friday, with the fiscal hawks seeking assurances that stricter crackdowns on Medicaid and green energy subsidies in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) would be in the final bill before a House-wide vote.
Advancing the legislation through the House Budget Committee is a largely procedural move. Any likely changes will be introduced as amendments in the House Rules Committee, the final gatekeeper before a House-wide vote, sometime early this week.
Notably, two of the Budget Committee fiscal hawks who demanded further changes – Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Ralph Norman, R-S.C. – also sit on the House Rules Committee.

My man Josh Brecheen was a "no" on Friday and voted "present" tonight. He's going to be a star conservative congressman down the road. Only in his first term, but he's doing good things so far.

And yet the budget bill doesn’t have the tax cuts on tips, overtime, or social security benefits…

Is that true?
Yes. It also has negligible reductions in the deficit. It's not any better than any other omnibus we've seen over the last 15 years.

Those cuts will never happen

It's either going to more of the same sausage or more than likely a CR when this big bloated behemoth of a bill bites the dust.
Why can't Trump just get congress to pass a budget as they are supposed to? Why does everything have to be some gimmicky pr stunt.
Congress is worthless and Trumps EO are increasingly not holding up to very biased courts.

There should be no we think this will go well. It should be this is a done deal. You out committee chairs and appointments on the line, and being primaried on the line to break the rebels and for the worst of them you out their deeds.

Sounds like some here owe Thomas Massie an apology.

Then that’s not necessarily sounding big or beautiful.

Oh it's certainly big, that's for sure. Both in cost and scale. I can remember when Johnson and the Republican Congress were saying no more 20,000 page omnibus bills - we were go back to individual area spending bills.
yeah, lol.

Actions are always lacking.

Why is Trump pushing this bill so hard?

Trump is letting us down on those campaign tax promises.

i assume that if the HPA and SHORT Acts can be re-added in their entirety, the rest of the stuff can be added, right?

Well it’s around 1,000 pages. The one in 23 was 7,000 pages.
So no 20,000 page bill.
I get your point, but way over exaggerated.

Because the GOP can’t actually do what they say they will do w/r/t fiscal responsibility because it will end their party. So they usually cherry pick a few programs that largely only hurt people that don’t vote republican or will cause a big stir amongst liberals but doesn’t really move the meter on deficit reduction. They hope that hearing libs bitch will distract you from them not having the conviction to their principles above their self preservation of sitting in the halls of power and getting free steak dinners or better from lobbyist.

No it’s not.
Aggies doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
One of the arguments from the no republicans is there aren’t enough cuts to offset the tax cuts.
