Will we have planes fly with AI pilots in the future?

I think Tesla is supposed to have their driverless taxi ready in the next few months. I don’t know much about planes, but I did do a flight simulator once. Seems the instruments are more suited for AI than a car would be. Anyway this story, which has nothing to do with AI, made me wonder:

Plane flew for 10 minutes with no one at the controls after co-pilot fainted
A Lufthansa flight to Spain flew with no one at the wheel for 10 minutes after the co-pilot lost consciousness while alone in the cockpit, according to a report from German news agency dpa.
The incident occurred on a flight from Frankfurt to Seville on February 17, 2024.
While the 43-year-old captain was using the restroom, the 38-year-old co-pilot of the Airbus A321 fainted.
That left the aircraft, which carried 199 passengers and six crew members, without anyone at the controls for approximately 10 minutes, dpa said.
The news agency cited a report from the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC as the source of the information.
However, the airline declined to disclose the findings of its investigation.
Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently operated the controls unintentionally, the aircraft was able to continue flying in a stable manner thanks to the active autopilot.
During this time period, the voice recorder recorded strange noises in the cockpit that were consistent with an acute health emergency, dpa reported.

Yes and it's coming fast
You'll see Palantir, Anduril and a few others lead the way there and try to supplant the current defense primes as the new warfare apparatus

Current pilots don’t listen to commands so why not?

hope they don't feel the need to program a certain fraction of them as female
maybe just the voice
maybe just the voice

Just hope they’re male AI pilots.

Yes and it's not as far off as people want to believe.

I would write in one now. There is a Honda jet that has an auto return function. If the pilot is disabled, you just press a button. And the aircraft lodge itself to the nearest airport and lands

USAF is doing it now in limited testing.

Good thing they have a great track record of meeting these types of deadlines

A large portion of the Ubers in downtown Austin are driverless already.

Most passengers are going to want a pilot behind the yoke - skin in the game.
Cargo planes? AI can have ‘em

They kinda do already. Commercial planes have an auto land function which lines up the plane with the glide slope, lands it and stops it on the runway.
Also Auto pilot can be engaged right after takeoff it will follow the preprogrammed flight path and take it from origin to destination all by computer.
But I rather not an AI pilot, I still want someone in the cockpit who is trained to land the plane in any circumstance. Planes have multiple reduncencies, putting it all on a AI system is doomed to lead to crashes and death. While that happens already, I would bet a computer controlled flight monitored by human pilots is safer than a computer controlled flight with no human oversight.

I saw that movie and it didn’t turn out very good.

It isn’t AI but planes already fly themselves. Garmin already has a system that will land a plane without a pilot if the pilot is incapacitated. AI is really only needed to input the proper information into the autopilot systems.

Cirrus Vision Jet has an emergency auto land feature. If the pilot is incapacitated passengers can press a button and AI takes over. Plots terrain and weather patterns while calculating the nearest airports and the best runway to land. It does this while contacting emergency crews and tower. It flys and lands the jet, bringing it to complete stop. This private jet also has a rocket inside it's nose that launches a parachute if you're going to crash.

Of course, why not? If it can be dreamed of, at some point, it will be done. That's man's lot in life.

With all the autopilot and FMS programming planes can just about do it right now.

DARPA ACE/AIR programs.
Being done as we speak.

I saw Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning....
I want nothing to do with AI piloting anything. It'll turn on you.
