I didn't see this one coming.

Dave needs to be the drummer and do like a Cowboy Mouth stage setup

They tolerated Hawkins’ drug use for years, so what could he have done?

Is he still playing with A Perfect Circle? Maybe Dave wants him to commit to Foo Fighters full time.

So how does this work? He was simply a sideman and was fired by certain other bandmembers?
In a book on The Burritos Chris Hillman talked about he had special legal rights w/both The Byrds & Burritos b/c he was a member for each band's first album. But Gram Parsons was also an original Burrito, & Hillman saw to it that he was fired.
Crosby was fired from The Byrds, & Cale from The Velvet Underground. Brian Jones was the founder of the Stones & he was fired by Mick & Keith (The Beatles had their manager fire Pete Best - give MJ & KR credit for doing it themselves)

Bands are just a business and it depends on how they are setup, as to who can fire or be fired.
I would imagine that Dave Grohl is the 100 percent owner of the Foo Fighters and everyone else is just an employee.

very common for a “band” to be an incorporated entity with either board members or LLC partners (ie owners) that may or may not include everyone.
the Grateful Dead was very unique in that not only were all the band members “owners” (they were members of the board and had % stake in revenues and liabilities) the equipment crew and some of band management were also stakeholders. But most aren’t like that at all, and as original members die/leave/etc replacements are many times hired employees.
The famous example is Richard Wright who was an owner in Pink Floyd, was dismissed (bought out), came back as a salaried employee and thus was the only band member who actually made money on the tour for The Wall
it seems likely that Dave grohl IS foo fighters and everyone else is an employee

I have read that before. Seem to recall that the band members are W2 employees but don't remember where I saw it.

He's 100% owner I think but they've stated multiple times it's an even split. Dave has Nirvana money and didn't want it financials to be a reason for turmoil. This was pre-Raimi and Freese though so IDK now.
Freese wasn't my first choice (Rufus Taylor) but he's about as solid as you can get. That being said seeing them live with him, something doesn't feel right. He's almost too good and clinical for them. Hawkins wasn't as good of a drummer but he had a recklessness about him live that was awesome to watch.
REALLY shitty they didn't give him a solid reason and I hope they aren't bringing in Taylor's son.

Definitely... he took all the touring members of UT after they broke up and formed Wilco... the only one left is Stirrat..

My theory IS they’ve been waiting for Shane Hawkins to get older and learn the catalog.

Shane is or about to be 18. My guess he is going to be the new drummer. If so, I'm a little surprised they just didn’t tell Josh that.

That's a shock to be honest. Freese seems far too professional and veteran to have done some dumb shite to get kicked out.
I'm torn too. Foo Fighters suck. Dave Grohl is a jackass. Josh Freese is awesome. So I'm glad he's not with them anymore but insulted on his behalf

My biggest hang up with that is I think 1 of 2 things would happen. They either tell Freese that 2 years ago or they tell him that now. I also think that's a TERRIBLE idea. I get being a little sentimental, especially after he ripped tits at the tribute show, but you kinda have your pick of drummers. You don't go with a kid with very little experience.
This move appears to have pissed off some other pros as well. I thought it'd be Rufus Taylor, he just makes too much sense. He's out this summer with the Darkness though so idk.

This. But to be honest, Josh HAD to know the plan would be for Shane to come in once he is ready. Is that now? Yet to be seen.
