The rise of medications like Ozempic and Wegovy has injected a new dynamic into America’s struggle with obesity, prompting questions as to whether the country is at a turning point in a health epidemic that’s persisted for years.
As it stands, around 2 in 5 American adults are obese – defined as having a body mass index of 30 or above – according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition is associated with a host of serious medical issues – from stroke and diabetes to heart attack and cancer. It’s also estimated to cost the country’s health care system nearly $173 billion a year.
As part of the 2025 Best States rankings, U.S. News evaluated adult obesity rates for all 50 states based on self-reported survey data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a partnership between the CDC and state health departments. A state’s obesity rate factors into the public health subcategory of the Best States analysis, which provides insight into the quality of life in a state and informs the best states for health care rankings, as well as the list of the best states in the U.S. overall.
Thirty-nine states with data available for 2023 posted age-adjusted obesity rates of 30% or more, with three hitting a threshold of at least 40%.

So the answer is skip Ozempic, move north or west.

The advantages of being fit with a little bit of money in those states is wild.
Note to young men: Get fit, stay fit & work hard. The advantages that come from it - especially in states with poverty & obesity rates like that will have you standing out from the crowd.. for essentially being a normal dude from 50 years ago

Yes. It is shocking that my dear home state has fallen out out of the top 2. Arkansas and WV had to put in some serious work to jump MS.

Every time I travel out west to a ‘liberal shithole’ people are healthy, happy, and a pleasure to be around.
Travel to the south and men are fat, grumpy, and hard headed as f***

Appears fried foods are alive and well in the southeast part of the country.

Next time you're headed to the beach stop off in Defuniak Springs or Bonifay and hang out for a couple hours. The puzzle pieces will start falling into place.

I don't believe these numbers. Far more than 2/5 Mississippians are obese. Same thing is true for Louisiana and Bama.

Fried foods aren't the issue. It's portion sizes, excessive sugar and sweeteners, and a sedentary lifestyle.
I know a 19-year old girl who is an easy 220 lbs. I see her each morning with a sugary, syrupy Starbucks coffee in her hand and a breakfast sandwich. That's an 800 calorie milkshake and 600 calorie sandwich to start her day.

I've spent some time in West Virginia, and I'm surprised half the state doesn't drop dead walking from their cars into the store.

This isn’t true at all
The chemicals they put in processed food have an anti depressant effect

Surprised Ohio didn’t make the list. The Ohio tourists I’ve encountered in Seattle are all fat slobs. They reallly stick out.
