In an interview with CNBC, Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said tariffs are “still too high” – even with the recently announced agreement to lower duties on imports from China to 30% for 90 days.

“We’re wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb,” he said. “It’s more than any supplier can absorb. And so I’m concerned that consumer is going to start seeing higher prices. You’ll begin to see that, likely towards the tail end of this month, and then certainly much more in June.”

They're sure happy to start ordering again at the new 30% tariff.

I've been busy the past 3 nights.

So is it 30% or 55%? Some are claiming the old 25% tariff is still intact and we are adding the new 30% tariff to it. Anyone know the truth?

Majority of crap at places like Walmart and Amazon comes from China. 30% tariffs going to lead to price increases on such low margin businesses, not sure how anyone thinks it won't.

I feel like that shipping data is missing some really important context.

The US brings in about 15 million TEU’s per year from China. A little more than one million TEU’s per month.

Even with the 300% surge bringing May’s totals up to 26,000 TEU’s it means shipping from China has gone from being down 98% to only down 92%. And likely to get incrementally better as the month closes.

Even still; this number is far lower than what was being shipped during the pandemic lockdown and should be highly alarming for American consumers.

And that’s just China, let’s not forget that tariff is applied worldwide and one has to assume that other ports are probably experiencing similar effects.

So I agree; we’re probably only a matter of weeks out before price hikes happen.

You don't think that they would use this as an opportunity to make more profit do you?

Just don't buy shite you don't need for a month. They're trying to get people to stock up now. It's only been a month of tariffs. Buy American. Hope it backfires on them. Sometimes you just have to eat the costs. We do it in medicine all the time.

I run a program doing data center installations. We have been told to expect 8-15% price increases on materials across the board. These tariffs are affecting a lot more than the "cheap Chinese plastic toys" that most of this board seems to believe is the case.

It can be both. You’re at 55% if your goods are subject to the Section 301 Tariff (7.5-25% from Trump first term). Most people are subject to Section 301 for China imports, but not all depending on the HTS code. There are section 301 exclusions. The majority of those expire at the end of this month, so even more will be at the 55%.

Thought I saw

quote:

expects grocery prices across the retail industry to rise 3% to 5% by the end of this year, while merchandise more dependent on global sourcing could jump by 5% to 7%.

You got anything specific, or no... as usual y'all and trump melted when amazon was going to display tariff increases. Why try to obfuscate that data when making purchases. If it were as much as a non factor as you'd like us to believe, wouldn't y'all welcome this information being available?

Agreed. Crazy part is there is nothing made here. I tried looking up shoes and there is like 1 company sad. Nike made in Oregon would be great and would pay 200

Everything i buy is still at the inflated prices from Biden

And nothing will go up due to tarrifs

Also my numbers say the % will be zero across the board in 30days

Oh no. walmart will only see a 3% increase in sales instead of 5%.

Also their average ticket price, average receipt total of customers. Went up a lot more during 2020-2024 than it has this year.

quote:

In the first quarter, the average ticket remained unchanged from the previous year, even as the number of transactions increased by 3.8%.

This means prices didn't go up and more people bought shite.

Im willing to bet you don't see average ticket increases like we saw under Biden.

Just like muh inflation during Covid “forced” them to raise prices. Meanwhile their margins will expand.

Every publicly traded commodity was quite clearly on a well defined upward trajectory throughout the later 2/3 of 2020.

Lol, what would you care to wager on this I'd say put your money where your mouth is, but i don't trump dick on the money you'd lose.
