President Trump Announces Executive Order to Lower Prescription Drug Prices through MFN

Surprised this is not posted yet:
quote:
For many years the World has wondered why Prescription Drugs and Pharmaceuticals in the United States of America were SO MUCH HIGHER IN PRICE THAN THEY WERE IN ANY OTHER NATION, SOMETIMES BEING FIVE TO TEN TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SAME DRUG, MANUFACTURED IN THE EXACT SAME LABORATORY OR PLANT, BY THE SAME COMPANY??? It was always difficult to explain and very embarrassing because, in fact, there was no correct or rightful answer.
The Pharmaceutical/Drug Companies would say, for years, that it was Research and Development Costs, and that all of these costs were, and would be, for no reason whatsoever, borne by the “suckers” of America, ALONE. Campaign Contributions can do wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican Party. We are going to do the right thing, something that the Democrats have fought for many years.
Therefore, I am pleased to announce that Tomorrow morning, in the White House, at 9:00 A.M., I will be signing one of the most consequential Executive Orders in our Country’s history. Prescription Drug and Pharmaceutical prices will be REDUCED, almost immediately, by 30% to 80%. They will rise throughout the World in order to equalize and, for the first time in many years, bring FAIRNESS TO AMERICA!
I will be instituting a MOST FAVORED NATION’S POLICY whereby the United States will pay the same price as the Nation that pays the lowest price anywhere in the World. Our Country will finally be treated fairly, and our citizens Healthcare Costs will be reduced by numbers never even thought of before. Additionally, on top of everything else, the United States will save TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Sounds good in theory… but I need some background as to how this isn’t just a rebranded version of price controls?
Is it supposed to work by basically lowering American costs and the manufacturer has to raise prices for other countries to offset lost revenue?

So government interference and price controls? Getting closer to a command economy ?

How’s it not price controls now?
And doesn’t government place price controls on the economy’s biggest commodity right now, money?

When it’s unfair to your citizens, Yes. Course it depends on what you consider unfair. In this case, I agree with my boy Trump.

It's not price controls by the government. If they were setting the price then you'd be right. But in this case, the company has already set the price. They just weren't giving it to us.

People complaining about this with the biggest criticism being “price controls” will be the biggest critics in one had but are likely huge Federal Reserve defenders because they love price controls on money. Congress has given the FR the authority to set the supply and price of money.

This EO is like implementing anti-trust laws internationally.

Some of you need to read up on trade laws regarding the US.
If Pepsi or Coke charged a higher price to Wal Mart than other customers, particularly since Wal Mart was their largest customer, their arse would be dragged into court and fined in a minute.
It is price fixing by the companies NOT price controls by the US govt. They are free to charge other customers in the world whatever they want, we just get the lowest price of those countries.

Explain to me how negotiating drug prices is the same as telling a grocery store with thin margins they have to sell their items for less than it costs them to get product on the shelves.
And if we wanted a true free market there wouldn’t be restrictions on buying cheaper drugs from other countries like Canada.
Didn’t know this, but part of an early executive order.

We have a health epidemic which could be considered a national emergency.
These controls could be seen as preventing price gouging.

If drug companies like their prices they can just charge Europe and other countries US prices.

If it was "price controls" would it not be done at the retail/distributor level and not the wholesale/manufacturer level?
What I'm curious about is the how of how we got here... are the pharmaceutical companies facing cost controls in other countries?
If so, then they made the choice to inflate US prices, emphasis on choice, because we have no price controls?
Is it a medicare/subsidy scam where they are taking advantage of the US population because of the way healthcare works in this country when gov't is involved? That's a whole other ballgame.
The how we got here determines whether "price controls" or "market restrictions" are warranted.... or not. Whether lawsuits and possibly charges are warranted... or not.

Charging people more for the same item simply because they are American is a violation of the Civil Rights Act. You cannot charge a person more because of their national origin.
