I'm up in NELA, and Ellick is all I have ever heard it called. Apparently, some other posters did not know Ellick is Alexandria, so I was curious how the nickname came about. Do an OT etymologists out there care to enlighten us?

People were so excited to tell folks they were going there that they just had to shorten it to save time so they could get on the road.

This is the answer. In BR they say AL-lick when pronouncing Alex Box Stadium, in Cenla they say Ellick

pinoff Thread: How did Alexandria come to be known as Ellick?

Because of how people from there say "Alexandria", ie "ELL-ick-zandria" instead of "AL-ex-andria". Thus Ellick instead of Alec

Real talk, I grew up in a small CENLA town about an hour from Ellick. We had to drive there to buy school clothes. It was a pretty big deal to go to the mall in the 80's.

I can remember when Albertson's opened there near Security Sporting Goods and we thought we hit the trifecta.

There is an infamous traffic circle in Ellick that is so large it has its own ecosystem and was the location of so many accidents that attorneys would wait in the shadows handing out business cards to the accident victims. If I am not in a hurry going cross state, I will depart I-49 just to reminisce how this at one time was the major cross roads of Louisiana.

There is a huge lawyer’s office overlooking the circle now.

I first heard it pronounced that way by a cute girl with a NLA accent. It was absolutely delightful (as was she) and I've called it that ever since.

I know what you mean. As a small kid coming from Jonesville, Ellick may as well have been NYC. We even wore church clothes to doctor’s appointments that doubled into Sam’s Club trips.
