Disney‘s CEO Bob Iger has admitted the company’s film slate has struggled in post-pandemic times by focusing too much on quantity and not enough on quality.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, in particular, hasn’t restored its luster since the epic culmination of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” There have been hits since COVID, like “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” But success has been wildly inconsistent as tentpoles like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “The Marvels” and “Captain America: Brave New World” were among Disney’s first comic book franchise installments to lose money since the MCU brought superhero movies in vogue.

However, Iger views “Thunderbolts”,” which debuted last weekend to $76 million, as the “first and best example” of the studio’s new priority to make better movies… even if that means there are fewer of them.

“We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, that we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more,” Iger said during Wednesday’s investor call. “We’ve also learned over over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality. I think the first and best example is ‘Thunderbolts*.’ I feel very good about that.”

quote:

“I have a lot of confidence that are upcoming slate,” Iger said, referring to films like “Lilo & Stitch,” “Zootopia 2,” “Fantastic Four: The First Steps” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which will close out 2025. Then in 2026, there’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Toy Story 5.”

“That’s quite a lineup,” he said, adding it’s “as strong as any slate that I’ve seen in a long time.”

That's not why.*

* except maybe for Marvel. They oversaturated that shite for a while and I think it fatigued people.

How about making something that's not a Marvel movie then?

Disney got ideological to obnoxious and silly levels. I don't expect them to back completely off that, but it does appear they are moderating it more than they were. But the main issue is still fatigue. Thunderbolts looks like the same paint-by-numbers formula that made Guardians of the Galaxy a success and I'm sure the next crop of Avengers will be a madlibs of the prior Avengers. It will be like a reality show: same shite, different day. That's fine if people lap it up like they do reality shows, but Marvel isn't raking it in like they used to and yet Disney is still cranking this crap out over and over and over. When people do get sick of it, can Disney still make a good movie without needing a brand to sell it?

I agree with the first part, because rather than have two big "serves their purpose" formula movies a season, a month doesn't go by where you're not seeing the trailer for the current month's equivalent of Ms. Marvel (utter schlock that doesn't even serve the purpose of having your kids insert "I am Groot" into every conversation for a week.) I haven't seen half the stuff he lists as a miss, and it's free on Disney+. That's damning when I'd rather watch near garbage on Prime.

Does the majority of the movie going populace that watches these kinds of movies have the capacity to absorb a movie without a brand? I doubt it.

Not sure it’s fatigue, watch Iron man or The Winter Soldier then watch this movie back to back. The tone couldn’t be more different. Even though this one covers some serious material it’s still non stop quips, silly insults and all that crap the entire time. You don’t get a beat without it.
And that’s just an example of missing the entire point, you also have characters who forgot who they were or what they were doing just one movie or show ago, an idiotic storyline, a impossibly stupid villain and the Disney staple time warping. It’s just a bad movie so it’s hard to say if it’s fatigue because most people don’t like bad movies.

I hear it is better than Brave New World. . .but the bar is just so low for Disney right now, they would have to intentionally limbo under it

It was ok. Some very funny parts. It’s an average movie. Which is probably an upgrade to the stuff Marvel has been putting out. In all honesty I haven’t seen much Marvel stuff lately. After Strange 2, I think I’ve only seen this and Deadpool. Could be wrong. It’s better than Strange 2 for sure.
