Air Travel with Baby

We will be traveling with a 5 month old in a few weeks and my concern is his food. We found pre made formula bottles that will make our life easier, but will we be allowed to bring that as carry on? We would need to bring about 12 8 oz bottles

Is it necessary to bring baby? How long is the flight?
I’d try to stay away… was in flight to Hawaii and baby never shut up….miserable

Yes, we flew a few times with our son when he was still on formula and never had any issue checking in and flying with the premade formula bottles.

We weren’t going to due to the challenges with it but grandparents can’t watch him due to surgery that week.
We will be on frontier so probably won’t be loudest ones anyways lol

12 8oz bottles for a domestic flight? Does your kid have a size 17 foot already? Bring what you need to get to your lodging, get the rest delivered to the lodging via Amazon or Walmart+. Or Instacart.

TSA officers may need to test the liquids for explosives or concealed prohibited items.
Although not required, to expedite the screening process, it is recommended that formula and breast milk be transported in clear, translucent bottles and not plastic bags or pouches. Liquids in plastic bags or pouches may not be able to be screened by Bottle Liquid Scanners, and you may be asked to open them (if feasible) for alternate screening such as Explosive Trace Detection and Vapor Analysis for the presence of liquid explosives. Screening will never include placing anything into the medically necessary liquid.

Had a flight with a lady whose baby cried from Boston to Frankfurt. Maybe 1 hour of silence on an 8-hour red-eye flight. It was brutal.

This is not rocket science
5 months is not a bad age to fly
The most important factor is how long is the flight
TSA will let you bring formula and you can buy bottled water at the airport
You can also travel with only 2-3 bottles and clean them at the airport, it's really not that hard
You can check the carseat free and gate check a travel size stroller - that way you can use at both airports
You're overthinking this - if you go in prepared you will be fine

Thank you those are great ideas with just getting the stuff at the destination. We clearly don’t want to be those parents that ruin the flight for everyone else.

Bring multiple pacifiers. Make sure the baby has a bottle or a pacifier in its mouth from takeoff to cruising altitude, and from cruise to landing. The pressure that builds up in their ears, which is what causes most babies to cry on planes, is resolved when they swallow.
Don't overthink it. As long as a kid isn't in my seat, touching my stuff repeatedly, it doesn't even register, unless you let the kid (when it gets older) listen to an iPad at full volume without headphones. Crying usually is a non issue, most of us know the parents are embarrassed to hell and trying everything they can. And then there are the parents that just don't give a shite, and we know the difference. The older the kid gets, the less grace you'll get, in general

Good call, I’d just leave the baby at home. It’s probably not a long trip, just make sure it has plenty of bottles close by and it should be fine

The reason babies cry during flying is their ears are hurting with air pressure build up in their ears at higher altitude. They too young to know how to swallow and "pop" their ears to equalize pressure.

We have traveled all over the world with our son and 4-6 months was the best. You should have no issues bringing formula through security, we packed breast milk and had no issues. You can also bring the formula powder through and just re-use bottles instead of bringing 12 with you, which seems like overkill.

Which is why it's common to feed them so they swallow.

Correct. Feed on take-off and landing and maybe at altitude if long enough.

Thank you all. I know it’s been done by people for years. Just overwhelming on the forefront

All good, it gets to be second nature at some point. My son will turn 1 at the end of the month and has flown 36,000 miles his first year on Earth.

I had a baby going on and on for 4 hours recently.
I only knew it because the baby was in my line of sight, 2 rows up in the aisle across from my aisle seat.
Noise canceling headphones are a god send. You should try it.
