Any of you baws or bawettes prefer Dauphin Island over Gulf Shores/Orange Beach?

I am looking for pros and cons of it versus the Gulf Shores area. I am aware that the water is much murkier than it is east of Mobile Bay.I have stayed around Gulf Shores many times over the years, but I’ve never been to Dauphin Island.

D'Iberville mistakenly named it Île du Massacre (Massacre Island) because of a large pile of human skeletons discovered there. In reality, the site was a Mississippian burial mound which had been broken open by a hurricane, not a massacre site; however, the dramatic misnomer stuck

I learned something here today.

All the OT ballers have houses on Ono Island. Dauphin island is paramount to a trailer park.

If Orange Beach is the Walmart of beaches, Dauphin island is the dollar general.

We liked Dauphin Island. There isn't much to do though.

There's the murky water and there's the fact that a lot of people don't like looking out on the Gulf and seeing a bunch of oil rigs on the horizon.

At least that was why I could never convince my wife to go there. I liked the idea of a 2 hour 15 minute drive to a Gulf beach.

I find it a really chill laid back place.

Louisiana folks ruined OBA/Gulf Shores. Please do not encourage them to go to DI

Water is not that bad. But the island is nice and quiet without all the resort b.s. that surrounds Orange Bch and Gulf Shores. I like it for a quiet weekend like a Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon stay. There are some rentals and condos available, but the place is not geared to tourism wholesale

Next time, based on this, you could look for bones, apparently.

Yep. Pretty lacking with stores and restaurants, but I’ve thought about going there once for a chill get away.

Dauphin island is more laid back. Less to do. Fewer restaurants or bars. No big resorts.

Depends on what you want

I’ve stayed out on dauphin island for weeks at a time and just fished every day in my boat , cooked seafood on the pier and had a blast with friends and family.

Depends what you're looking for and for who, but Dauphin Island is great.

But do not speed, those cops need all the revenue they can get and write a regular speeding ticket a reckless driving ticket.

There is an old goat ranch golf course that is awesome and beautiful scenes of the Gulf and sand dunes.

Good restaurant called Pirates at the golf course and one or two bars down there.

I used to like it as a youngster, but I haven't been to it after hurricane Frederic went through so take that for what it's worth. :)

If I get a terminal illness, I'll move to Dauphin Island.

I'll die of boredom first.

We went years ago and had a great time. Not close to little shops and touristy fun stuff like mini-golf

You could see oil rigs in the gulf but it was a cheap huge house and it was an awesome weekend

I used to go every year for the deep sea rodeo. It was always a good time.
