Go east of Mobile use 182 (same hwy the Flor-Bama is on). When it turns north in hwy 292 it is going to be on the right. Love going there, can''t beat the set up.

Don't like the Alabama portion of the Gulf up to Florabama and Ono. I sliced by foot on an oyster trying to swim to friend's house on Ono Island from Florabama. It would be a 6 mile walk or a 300 yard swim. Once I sliced my foot, I was like swimming across from Florabama to Ono pouring blood would attract sharks so didn't do it. Left my card at Florabama so couldn't get cab.

Anyways, the beaches in Destin and East in my opinion are nicer than Alabama east of Mobile Bay beaches. Better sand, less gritty.

Where is Johnston beach?

It is a gulf islands sea shore federal park. Driving east from the florabama, the highway will curve left and you will reach a traffic circle. Turn right and the entrance is about 1/2 mile down. Johnson Beach is the eastern most 6ish miles of perdido key. at the first parking lot, it has bathrooms, outdoor showers and two large pavilions.

But then you have to drive all the way to Dauphin Island and then pay 15 dollars for your car to cross and 6 dollars per person to cross so a family of 4 is 15 + (6x4) =39 dollars.

It is a weird pricing scheme, but I did cross it once. And rode the one President Obama rode in 2011. There is a plaque onboard commemorating the event and the ferry was call signed as Ferry One during his transit like Air Force One.

It is about a 30-45 minute ride across the bay, but it does save you a 2 hour car ride if you have to drive to Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island by car. It also eliminates your need if driving to Fort Morgan from the west all the traffic associated with downtown Mobile and that stupid tunnel and bay way that backs up. But then you also bypass Bucees at the Baldwin Beach Express exit. At least they finally took the toll off of the bridge to Gulf Shores on the Foley side. The the lower half of the BBE is called the Foley beach express and ends not at the beach but on AL 180 that straddles the north side of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

If you plan the ferry into the trip it works out just fine. Pack a little picnic lunch, if you miss the boat, just hang out with a snack and enjoy the area, maybe hit the fort for a little bit, while you wait for the next one. The kids love sitting up on the decks on the ferry, it’s a nice change of pace to dealing with the tunnel and bridge

If you are truly wanting to get away from everyday life and the masses of assholes that come with it, Dauphin Island is a great choice. Few people, no fast food restaurants on the island, no traffic with road ragers to ruin your mood, one red light on the whole Island, etc. It's a throwback place with a slow pace of life.

Yes, depending on the time of the year and the weather, the water can be murky. And there are some oil rigs very far out in the water (though they look pretty cool lit up in the distance at night), but the sunsets are beautiful, there are lots of birds and sea life, and it's just a pretty/laid back atmosphere to relax and enjoy mother nature in. No beach overcrowding like many places I have been to. There are very few activities to do on the Island, but that is also what makes it great if you're trying to get away from things. That keeps the masses away.

True and I’ve done that with mixed reviews.
Once I went to dauphin island to get the ferry over to ft Morgan and it was the same weekend as the alabama fishing tournament so it was super crowded and we waited 4 hours to get on the ferry. It was a night mare with young kids and their friends. We spent a lot of time in the very small aquariium and fort gaines.

Another time we took the ferry and it wasn’t crowded at all. Didn’t save any time tho. It was just more fun.

Navarre for me but I am old and do not like going out to eat or kids places at the beach.

Room to beach - A few beers
Beach to room - A few more beers
Repeat. - and a few more beers

Perfect beach vacation for me..

Dauphin Island is where you go if you don't give a shite about what color the water is, don't like shopping or venturing out, but love a wide open beach and prefer to cook nightly rather than go to restaurants.

I know a handful of people that love it and a handful of people that would probably rather die than go there.

How so?
I’m not arguing the point, just wondering if your mean too many people, and thus too commercialized, or too trashy, etc.

All of the above because I think they are all connected. Don’t get me wrong, the DI crowd is pretty trashy as well. It just doesn’t have the over commercialized aspect of it. DI & Fort Morgan are probably the best places to go for a peaceful getaway in the area.

Rent a house on the bay side in Fort Morgan. Cool spot if you find a house with a pier.

That just makes you dumb.

Drive around.

I check the schedule and time it.

Same with heading back. If I'm ready to go back to LA and im not going to make the ferry leaving in 3 minutes, or its too early and they arent running, I just go back the other way.

Nah

I’m not dumb.

You should question why you get on message boards and insult people. Is it because you’re insecure?

My Mom has a beach house on Dauphin Island - Audubon Place address

Nice place but she sold it after beach keep eroding - she was on the ferry side of the Island.

We took the ferry over when we wanted to go to OB for the day -

Orange Beach is great! It’s much less crowded than Gulf Shores to the west and Flora-Bama Roadhouse to the east, but still offers plenty to do. Plus, it’s very close to Gulf Shores anyway. As for Dauphin Island, I haven’t been there.

Well, if it weren’t for Louisiana folks…and all other folks, who go to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, all you rednecks would still be picking sand fleas out of your cousins arse on a beach with no development.
