Which car to pick?

Daughter will turn 16 shortly. Two options for automobile. Both will be gifts from other family members, so this is just considering the cost to operate, maintain, insure the vehicle.
1. 2015 Honda pilot 180,000 miles. Recent engine overhaul.
2. 2018 Volvo xc90 115,000 miles.
Surprisingly (to me), basic insurance (liability, uninsured motorist) is significantly cheaper on the Volvo, almost $500 per year less than pilot.
Volvo is the safer vehicle, but is it significantly safer than the similar sized pilot?
My concern is repairs on Volvo will be much more costly.
Which is better long term option overall?

Volvo..the auto braking and other driver assist features

Long term is an interesting choice of words for this situation, and possibly not the right goal.
For a Brand new driver, go with the safer option (the Volvo). If the Volvo has that many miles at 7 years old, it’s probably due to less wear and tear highway miles, so it may be in better shape than you think. Volvo should be able to make it to college age, and hopefully through college graduation

Pilot, it’s a tank, safer of the two.
As for the Volvo, my friend had one, started burning oil. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it.
Reliability and dependability, the Honda, is a step up.
Volvo parts, a little pricey.

that vehicle with proper maintenance should last more than 185miles....could be other problems with vehicle upkeep. Be leary.

The Pilot.
One of my nurses has one (a 2015?) with 330,000 miles on it.
They are reliable except for the O2 sensors which are annoying.

Insurance for teenagers is significantly cheaper on cars with all the driver assist features (like 5k-6k per year). You might want to increase the amount you are willing to spend if you are concerned about the reliability of the Volvo. See if you can find a little bit newer Honda or Toyota because it will even out on your Insurance cost.

No one has ever died in a Volvo XC90, EVER. That being said, maintenance is very expensive. On that note I'd be very concerned about which engine this model is equipped with. They all have a turbo charged 2.0 liter 4 cylinder but the higher trims add a supercharger to the mix. That's a 4 cylinder that is both turbocharged and supercharged, lot's to go wrong there. I'd prefer a lower trim that just the 2.0L turbo without that added supercharger.

If you go with the Pilot look into VCM muzzlers.

That is not necessary until 2016 began with back row cylinder deactivation. The 2015 is more like a truck frame. Don't know if I would want to pay for future high cost with the Volvo. Go on the Honda board and you will see numerous old Pilots that have gone 300k miles, it's all about the maintenance.

I'd go with the Honda, fwiw.
Have you tried a cost of ownership calculator?
May not be able to get exact year comparison, but you can compare against equal years.
Here's link to AAA calculator.

This shows the Honda costs less for ownership, and insurance cost lower than the Volvo.

ive been contemplating buying a maserati GT the last 10 years. cheap as heck can get a nice used one for 30k. just pay cash. problem is we have no maserati dealer here. They do in Houston. If i lived there i woulda bought one ages back.
You can get a used gallardo for under 100k.

I see. I’ve got an Odyssey with VCM. Muzzled it as a precaution. I thought these Pilots were already sharing the VCM issue before 2016, but looks like that’s not the case.

I'm a Honda guy and every one (8 total since 1984) has made it to at least 200K miles without major maintenance except for replacing a transmission in my 05 Acura TL at 175K. The TL almost hit 300K before the starter died and I decided to get rid of it.
Doing business with Volvo is doing business with the Chinese Communist Party. Why support a government that wants to destroy us?

I went cheap and high mileage with my kid’s first car. $2000 in repairs and it lasted 2 years. Replaced it with a Corolla a few years old with like 50k miles on it. I want it to at least last through college.
ETa just saw that you aren’t paying for it. The Honda.

If they are both free, then quit over thinking it and let her decide. No reason to what-if it from a maintenance standpoint, both could last forever and both could become a money-pit.
This is not her long term car, and she is going to put minimal miles on either.
$500 savings a year should not be ignored.
