Here’s a good link:

I think he’s still fricked. They can get the same conviction without the racial stuff coming out.

That guy should be feeling around for uncooked ramen crumbs under his bunk bed right now.

It has been vacated and remanded for a new trial. Distilled down it is because the prosecution elicited a racial epithet Ward supposedly uttered during the assault. That is a bit of a no no but you generally don't see a post-conviction mistrial based on a single utterance supposedly from the defendant's mouth.

It's unfortunate to see a guy like Ward spending his entire prime of life 30-40 years in prison from something he has and had no recollection of.. I'll be clear that I'm not defending him, it's obvious he did it. Just a crazy situation. Odds of being a repeat offender is practically none. He was a nice guy in my encounters when sober. Obviously isn't or wasn't when drunk. They had to of paid that lawyer a shite ton to find this strategy 7 years after it happened.

Ok, you can argue with someone else. I'm not defending him. I'm saying it's atypical. As tragic of a situation as it gets because even if he is let out, it will always follow him. Getting a professional white collar job is out the door unless it's family/friends connection.

From your typical white upper middle class Louisiana family, pretty sure he was a Kappa Sig at LSU for a bit. I've met him. He was a nice guy in my encounters when sober.

It’s sad that defending yourself is illegal in a liberal city

He is a POS and deserves to stay behind bars. I’m sure this new trail will end in the same result as the last.

He did it and he should serve significant time behind bars.

That being said….. it will be interesting to see how much actual time he serves compared at the NOLA and BR gang bangers, who seem to get out after murder convictions fairly quickly, only to kill again.

Yup. He was a loose cannon waiting for someone to test him and will be convicted again.

Is he out of jail until the next trial?
