What's up with this dumpster fire over at St. George Fire Department?

What's the deal with the St. George Fire Department? It sounds like a major drama. You've got the firefighters locked in a legal battle over their pay, and apparently, the bosses are trying to pull a fast one and claw back any potential winnings. Then, get this, they supposedly dangled raises in front of some firefighters and then snatched them away when the union got involved. And to top it all off, there's this whole saga about millions of dollars collected for a fire station that still hasn't been built. Seriously, it's like one thing after another over there.

Check out the Union's Facebook Page

I must admit, some awesome memes have come out of this though...

If there’s one thing fire departments are good for internally it’s drama. Sadly, many folks involved are more concerned with politics than fire/ems training. And I’m a newly retired firefighter

frick them. I wouldn't negotiate with a public sector unions either. Like negotiating with terrorists.

Drop the union and get a raise. Needs to happen with every public sector union.

Money is something St. George FD has never been short on. They can't spend the money fast enough. They've always had the nicest stations, uniforms, gear, and vehicles in the entire BR area.

About 7 guys who are disgruntled idiots doing BRFD and Together Baton Rouge Work are trying their best to disrupt the new City of St. George. They formed a union no one had heard about 4 years ago, gave garret graves an award and then went after Dustin Yates and then targeted a few council seats. They are the highest paid firefighters in Louisiana. Everyone in St. George loves the fire department and hates these idiots.

People see fire dept, and vote for the tax. No one scrutinizes their operation they just assume the taxes are necessary.

FWIW, I am happy with the service SGFD provides.

I mean if they were going to give out raises and now their is a union, then they will need to negotiate with the union.

Are they actually becoming a municipal service just for the city of StG? thought it was an existing fire district within East Baton Rouge parish long before the city existed to allow for different taxes and specific increased services. I didn’t think it actually exactly matched the city’s boundaries.

EDIT:
I just found the below audit info from 2023 which also explains why it was audited separately and outside of the metro parish govt. Metro appoints board members. Its boundaries are different than the city of St George and has been around for a long time. It also seems to still cover areas the city of BR annexed in response to attempts to incorporate. Not sure why its issues seem to be getting intermingled with the city of St George.

quote:

As of and for the Year ended September 30, 2023
Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
A. On December 31, 1993, the Metropolitan Council of the City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge (City/Parish) created the Advisory Board as a Board of Commissioners that governs the St. George Fire Protection District (the District) pursuant to Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:1491-1508 effective January 1, 1994. Article VI, Sections 15 and 19 of the Louisiana Constitution of 1974, authorized the Metropolitan Council to appoint 5 members to the Board of Commissions.

The District provides emergency services to a 84 square mile area of East Baton Rouge Parish. The District is located in the southern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish. It includes East Baton Rouge Parish outside of the city limits of Baton Rouge with the parish line being the boundary on the eastern, western and southern ends and Harrell's Ferry Road being the northern boundary.

The District presently has eight stations to provide fire protection within their district. The District has 199 employees.

…Although the Metropolitan Council appoints the members of the Board of Commissions, the District did not meet the remaining criteria to be considered a component unit of the City/Parish.

you don’t know the half of it. Behind their nice new building on airline is a couple of the nicest warehouses I’ve ever seen, completely climate controlled, full of vehicles, boats and equipment that could outfit a small country. All paid for.

Same group of yahoos who backed a candidate for mayor who got caught with hookers. The same mayoral candidate whose son works for the BRFD Union. The same BRFD Union that was living of funding from the citizens of St. George and one of the reasons why they had to form their own city. Who is the dumpster fire?
