Did Tim Tebow deserve a shot at MLB 12 years after he played organized baseball in HS?

Ran across someone saying he deserved it.

So if some random 28-30 year old dude releases a statement saying he wants to make a go at MLB and invites MLB scouts to watch him hit, how many scouts show up?

Weirder things have happened.

WWE wrestler Brock Lesner quit wrestling at one point and tried out as a DE with the Minnesota Vikings, making it to the final set of cuts despite not having played since HS 6+ years earlier.

If someone is a good enough athlete, they can transition sports even after not playing for a while as long as they are in great shape.

Helluva thing to be worried about in 2025.

I don't see the similarity between some random guy and a former Heisman trophy winner who had a 5 year NFL career. Hope this helps.

Lesnar is a physical freak and was an all American wrestler in college. Transitioning to DL would be an easier path.

They say hitting a baseball consistently is the hardest thing to do in sports.

I think it was a gimmick by the Mets to sign him.

It wasn't like Tebow was horrible and he kind of held his own up until AAA ball, where the talent got better.

We were discussing the baseball bat bros and how it would be cool if Will got a spring training invite with a team.

..and I mentioned Tebow playing in the minors and someone started saying he deserved it because he did a tryout in front of scouts and was hitting bombs.

He could probably play for the Braves right now.

Braves offense is shite, but they have been blowing late leads, too, with their bullpen.

Deserves?

Sure, I guess. No less than plenty others in the minors.

So you’re saying he got his opportunity because of his name and he did not, in fact, really deserve it.

Tebow hit .273 in AA ball in 271 AB.

Was he Willie Mays? No. But he was not a scrub.

mlb tends to give chances to athletic freaks, same reason they gave jordan a chance. Tebow was better than jordan and was actually a good AA player. Jordan was just a super natural athlete and if being serious if he would have stayed with baseball he prolly would have gotten to AAA. Dunno if to the show though

but do you understand how good you have to be to hit close to 300 in AA ball like Tebow did? Especially having not played for years? I dont think you understand how good the average juco player is much less how good AA ball is.

There have been plenty of people who killed it in the SEC in baseball that couldnt come close to doing what Tebow did in AA

deserved? frick if i know, but i know he was a damn good minor league player so in the end he proved he deserved that chance.

i did some business with a guy that's family owned the team in Buffalo.Think it was his sister that married the owner or something like that, doesn't matter

I was getting beers with him at a conference when Tebow was just starting. He was saying they were making a killing on ticket sales and merch. By far their best year finaicaly all because of Tebow

So in that regard, yes Tebow deserved a spot.

Dude was as buffalo as you could get. Fat, drank a ton and always ordered wings, then would complain the wings in Indianapolis or wherever we were aren't as good as Buffalo.

No but most minor leaguers never come close to the Bigs. So it's not a big deal.

And ultimately these are businesses, and big names like this draw in crowds/eye balls/clicks so I understand why the Mets did it.

Shows how amazing Aaron Judge and Shohei are

But Tebow was legit. Was he a starter at Major League? Not likely, but he did play well enough to be in AA.

all these minor league teams are still running a business. Jordan and tebow provided way more attention than they ever get with a regular minor leaguer.

Sure they didn't earn it in a traditional sense but neither went out there and made a joke of it.

I am also sure it was worth it for their teammates and opposing players because they have elite conversation starters for the rest of their lives.

No one mention Michael Jordan and his minor league stint. OP might lose it.
