I want to create a place for my 10
and 5 year old to shoot basketball at home. Our driveway is too steep. We have space in the back yard, but I really don’t want to pour cement since I don’t know how much they will use it. My 5 year old dribbles inside all the time. Is there something other than concrete that could be more easily put down and taken back up later? I don’t care if the grass dies.

If you have culture within 3 miles of your house be prepared for an invasion.

Lots of Asian American culture, but I think we’ll be fine.

Just play on the grass. It works.
If you play enough, you'll kill off the grass and have a hard packed dirt surface.
Then plant grass again once the basketball fad fades.

You could probably do something like put down a checker board pattern of 18" x 18" pavers then put horse stall mats on top

Found this on Wayfair. Not a full court, but looks interesting.

10 and 5 year olds… hmm. I’m trying to remember. And I have 2 who both play basketball on school and AAU teams who are complete polar opposites in preparation and practice. If I was you, I’d buy a backyard water-weighted goal, put it out in the grass and see what they do with it. I think my oldest at 10 would have worn down the grass enough to make me be ok with the cost of pouring a little slab out there.

no it doesn't.

Just pour a slab of concrete. Don't need to rebar it or anything. Just rent a jack hammer for $60 for 4 hours from hommie depot and bust it up once the kids are done with the court.

It's not the 1950s, no kid is going to want to do dribble hesi eurostepin on a dirt court

We have pretty thick St Augustine. It would take a while to wear down, especially with a 5 and 10 year old on it. I always loved dribbling. Not sure I ever would have gotten into basketball if I’d been forced to play on grass.

If you pour a slab, do it right. 4” high strength minimum with wire mesh. Prep the area well for lasting slab and to prevent super sonic ricochet effect when ball hits the edge.

You can make it a patio, or easily converted, if you think it wont get a lot of use down the road.

ETA: We used to play tackle basketball on the street.

What's wrong with the road in front of your home?

Grass to dirt is what I grew up on and the uneven ground really helped me develop my handles.

We played country basketball.

Just dribble on dirt and grass.

That's a big NOPE. Then you're asking for neighborhood kids to be playing b-ball in front your house under the street light at 11 o'clock at night.

This, the lighter balls with more bounce are good for this situation.

Sounds better than neighborhood kids staring at their phones until 11 o’clock at night.
