The last 2 weeks are a perfect microcosm of baseball

The saying “In baseball, it’s never as good or bad as it seems” couldn’t be more captured in these past 2 weekends.
Last weekend everyone was riding high and rightfully so. It was a stellar performance. This weekend we see “Is Johnson the man for the future?” threads. Balance and perspective. Have to have both in this game or it will eat you alive. Baseball is a sport of failure.
I have a hard time thinking that if I told you last Wednesday that we were going on a 7 game road stretch against 2 top 10 SEC teams and a solid in state club and we were going to win 4 games, that the REASONABLE BASEBALL FANS here wouldn’t have taken it.

All this may be true, but the schedule is going to get much tougher in the 2nd half of the SEC season. I highly doubt we finish with a 10-5 record for the remaining games.

Very well said. It is also a case of "enjoying negativism" - these folks cannot enjoy positivity, and they only feel alive with negative emotions.
I've known many people who go into a sporting event assuming a loss, and a win does nothing for them.

Oklahoma just beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. And Texas is the best team in the SEC as of now.

Last weekend, we got the timely hits while the opponent stranded a ton of runners.
This weekend, the opposite happened.

That's baseball

I think you mean MS State just beat Bama. Oklahoma lost at Bama 2 weeks ago, and then beat Vandy this past weekend at home 2/3.

And what's even crazier is that I think more highly of this team after being swept than I did last weekend after sweeping Oklahoma. We know the shitty defense won't last and we know the hitting slump won't last. There are too many hitters who we know are better than what they've been showing (Jones, Milam, Larson, Brown, Braswell, and so on).
I have no concerns about the offense, but we didn't know what to do about our relief pitching. We didn't know if we had more than 5 pitchers who could contribute on the weekends. Now that's changing. Against Oklahoma it seemed like we only swept because Kade went a CG and we were able to save Evans and Cowan for extended relief roles in games 2 and 3. That was a completely unsustainable model.
I'm expecting that the sweep will force Jay to let Cowan start. Previously we were winning so many games that there was no reason not to keep letting Shores pitch as much as possible to try to reach his ceiling. Now there's less margin for error for a top 8 seed and the emergence of other bullpen guys means we can win on Friday and Saturday without Cowan

this is true. also I think fans feel sophisticated when they are critics. and also fans refuse to understand that the sport of baseball involves the best team losing a lot.

I still feel it will balance itself out. I expect we will hit better soon, but the pitching will revert back some.
OU and Auburn are good. Texas is great and we should have won that series, but learned a little about the team through that.
You also get some of those tougher games at home.

Exactly. People really understimating the schedule we have already played to get here. Because we still have Tenn and Arky left? They struggled somewhat on the road as well. I mean they certainly don't look unbeatable.

That’s why they needed to at least take one this weekend. The remaining SEC schedule is harder. 20 wins is a stretch now. I believe hosting a super regional will be difficult. Tennessee, Arkansas and a revitalized A&M gonna be tough.

I'm thinking 18 SEC wins at this point. I don't think that gets a top 8 seed either. Probably need to win several games in the tourney with 18 wins to host a super. We just need to get hot at the right time.

Baseball is not for the faint of heart. It’s a brutal game. A high failure sport that requires a lot of mental toughness by individuals and teams.

Great post I agree. Also, even though this weekend sucked, it just highlights what a big deal it was that we swept OU and MSU who are both decent to good teams because it gave us some breathing room to have screwup. Need to refocus and go kick Bama’s arse.

We play more good teams, undoubtedly, but the best teams we will face are at home as opposed to the first half where they were away. That is at least a bright spot for LSU based on performances so far.
Remaining SEC Schedule for LSU 10-5 (currently ranked 9th)
vs #15 Alabama 8-7
vs #4 Tennessee 11-4
@ Unranked Texas A&M 6-9
vs #2 Arkansas 12-3
@ Unranked South Carolina 3-12
Teams we have played, series in (W-L)
vs Unranked Missouri 0-15 (3-0)
@ #1 Texas 13-2 (1-2)
vs Unranked Mississippi State 5-10 (3-0)
@ #18 Oklahoma 7-8 (3-0)
@ #8 Auburn 9-6 (0-3)

That’s exactly why baseball is by far the most arse chapping sport to watch. Especially with LSU. Lucky phags can bloop a few singles in no mans land and beat a team that’s been smoking the ball most of the game but right at defenders.

Tough but at home. Having bama and Tennessee at home, the box should be electric. Take 2 out of 3 in those, and you’re 14-7 with Arkansas at home, A&M and South Carolina on the road. Feel confident on finishing 20-10 and a national seed.
