Americans spend an average of 5hrs 16 mins on their phone each day

LINK
That’s a 14% increase from 2024 where the average is 4hrs, 37 mins.
Gen Z 6 hrs 27 min
Millennials 5 hrs 28 min
Gen X 4 hrs 48mins
Boomers 4 hrs 19 mins
I’m guilty of this too but I’m trying my hardest to get it down to 3 hrs a day. I’m reading a book before bed instead of scrolling. And when I wake up, I try not to touch it. Even when I leave the house to go to the grocery, sometimes I say frick it and leave it at home. Often my lizard brain say “what if something happens, you will need your phone” as fear manipulation. In reality, nothing ever happens.
It’s just a fact that smartphones are part of everyday life. It’s a part of our culture. We use it for communication, work, entertainment, commerce, information, banking, planning. It sounds odd but the bad part is that it’s easy and convenient. And that’s what makes it addictive.
And I don’t put the stats for each generation so we can get in an argument of which gen is better and which is worse. It’s a problem across all generations. I’m middle age but I worry about young people because one day I’m going to put a smartphone in my kid’s hands when she gets to the right age.
And think of all the things you can do if you can just reduce screen time 1 hr a day. That’s 1 hr each day you can go outside and go for a walk, get fresh air. I know when I’m working in my yard, it helps me mentally not just physically. I’m just more relaxed.
I’m just afraid screen time stats will only increase. Let me know what you guys do to reduce it.

I’m at the 5+ hour mark as well, but I think that counts when I have Apple Music going or when I’m listening to a podcast.
I do look at social media way too much. Especially at night. It’s not healthy. I didn’t even want to last night but got sucked into doom scrolling from 8:45pm to 11:00pm. Around 10:15pm I started dozing off while scrolling but still didn’t go to bed. Just woke myself up to watch more bullshite.

Much of it at redlights in front of me.

I’d like to get it down but most of mine is when I’m on the couch relaxing. In between commercials of the ballgame, etc. Just habitual I guess.

I'm so over it. The longest span I've ever gone with no phone or other device was an 8-night Glacier NP backcountry backpacking trip. It was amazing what it did for my brain/soul. Everything.

A good bit of my phone time is spent reading, so maybe not necessarily a bad thing. Could I cut out the brain rot IG reels? Yes

I spend too much time on my phone also but I know those numbers you’re seeing include when any apps are open like Waze or Spotify when driving

I put my phone on the space and science algo on YouTube and then go to sleep, so I'm probably at a solid 15 hours a day according to the phone.

I did the first 23 years of my life with no cell phone and the first 30 with no smartphone

I'm guilty of this too and it's shortening our lives.

I couldn’t do my job without a smart phone, I will readily admit that.
Every Sunday I get a screen time notification telling me if I went +/- on use. It’s satisfying when it tells me I went down.
No getting around it… they are a necessary evil. However, when it’s time to make quality time with the family, it’s best everybody put them up.

Ha. True. I got my first cell (Motorola flip) in law school. And I hated it. I sent my first text in 2004 then got a blackberry in late 2005. Digital tethers.

Yet ask them to spend 30-45mins a day exercising.

If I’m reading on my phone because it’s easier than carrying around books and magazines, I don’t see the problem?
Other uses:
5-6 text messages per week
Managing finances
Interacting with people I never met on the internet to better understand various world events
I use it as a phone for maybe an average of 20 minutes per week. It doesn’t seem right to still call it a phone.

No I don't, not even close. But the time I'm not on my phone, I'm on the damn work laptop so joke's on me, I lose anyway (weekdays at least)
