I really like both movies, but if I had to pick one. I would go with Dune: Chapter one. Can't wait for Chaper 3.

One was better than two, but I wasn't a big fan of either.

Chapter One is the better overall movie. Chapter two was a bigger spectacle.

Obligatory book is better.

I like them both, but felt that 2 was the better watch.

I go back and forth. Leto I was so good in part 1.

Felt like there were some big misses in casting, but overall love both films. 2 is more rewatchable to me regardless.

I didn't care for the movies. They are a part of this modern Hollywood movement where good acting is now considered people standing around with long gazes and slow speech. No one in the movie makes a facial expression except for Jason Momoa.

Since around 2016 I've noticed too many scenes in movies where notable actors walk around doing nothing and losers online fawn over their acting prowess just because they act brooding. It's only gotten worse and you don't have to look any further than the Dune movies or the 2022 Batman movie.

I thought both the movies were masterpieces. I understand what you are saying though. My main gripes with modern movies is that CGI is over used, not sticking to or appreciating source material, race swapping characters when it adds no value to the story, and post modernism film theory( the modern audience).

2 was great, but I still think 1 is better by a good margin.

I can’t stand them, either. Take an upvote in this sea of downvotes.

As Peter Griffin would say… “it insists upon itself.”

I’d contend that actually fits in this film universe, though. A bunch of royal families who have been bred into believing that they are the rightful heirs of the universe; the emotionless gazes reflect arrogance, lack of empathy, and the boredom they all feel with what they have. The general theme of the movie universe (and to a certain degree, the books) is that there are no heroes, just impulse and long cons.

I'll probably continue rewatching the 1984 version. I cannot imagine sitting through 1 and/or 2.

Two is MUCH better. One is just boring and slow. Two eventually gets to some action.

Hmm, interesting take. I’m gonna think about what you described.

In the moment, I guess I assumed that it was a time period where everyone was stoic. But why would every culture be so similarly stoic?

The David Lynch movie definitely established different social interactions for the different kingdoms/planets/cultures. The over-the-top antics of the Harkonens just seemed like part of their culture.

So, was this “acting style” just part of a current trend, sort of a natural extension of the current state of the art form, or was it a choice of the director? Or maybe we’re just overthinking it.

Enjoy both quite a bit, I think one is a little more rewatchable. Two was probably the better theatre experience.

If you didn't know the story, 1 was incredibly difficult to follow. 2 was much more digestible. 1 was more accurate to the book and 2 went a little woke with the independent she warrior stuff. They also made badass stilgar a bumbling idiot.

I think both movies had good aspects and both had flaws. I'd pick 2 as the better movie just from an entertainment standpoint.

I think I like 1 better. 2 was always going to be difficult to translate to screen, but they made a pretty good effort.
