Is the goal of the tariffs to negotiate free trade deals or is it to onshore jobs?

I’ve heard both (as well as that it’s to refi our debt and other crazy stuff). Are these negotiating tactics to get other countries to zero tariffs or is it meant to bring manufacturing jobs back to America? Because those two things are mutually exclusive. Or is there even a goal other than chaos?

Both true free Trade and creating more jobs here. Not that complicated.

Both. Fair trade not equal trade with a return to infrastructure manufacturing

If there's free trade, why would companies bring manufacturing here when they can outsource it overseas for pennies on the dollar?

It’s both….they aren’t mutually exclusive, because with some industries the goal is on shoring, with others it’s free trade/better terms…the status quo is no more.

Trumps goal is whatever the outcome is, and it will be decided retroactively.

The last 2 weeks have made that abundantly clear.

It doesn’t work like that though. Other countries have a comparative advantage in terms of labor cost so if true free trade there’s no incentive to bring those jobs back here and every incentive not to.

Free trade or fair trade?

I thought we were going for fair trade deals.

They don’t know, they’re just trying to go with what SEEMS like the most logical explanation, but Trump called a pause when treasury yields started showing signs of going the wrong way.

Call it free trade in the foreground, debt reservice in the background, and who knows, with that scattershot approach, they all get to claim they were correct.

I'm confused. You think Trump did this on accident?

1) Stop exporting dollars. We've done too much damage already.
2) Reduce foreign dependency. America is losing it's independence which will turn into loss of sovereignty. People are suggesting that we can't afford the high cost of US production, but the latent dollar damage represented by huge US dollar debt (and other $ assets) held overseas means we soon won't be able to afford foreign goods either. Sooner or later every deadbeat borrower, no matter how big, gets cut off by the bank.
3) Jobs at home and abroad will probably decline as America restructures, because our consumption has to decline even as it's redirected to American production. Barring nearterm massive scientific gains with respect to energy, the US and global economies are going to shrink no matter what else happens.

You can do both.

That’s already been posted.

Why not link everything Trump said?

You keep falling for this bs.

Just like college football guy posted an article and can’t quote me what Lutnick actually said in a private meeting.
