Why does San Antonio have a Double A baseball team and not a Triple A team?

The city has an NBA franchise, plenty of conventions and a population that is nearly 1.5 million people.

Albuquerque, Indianapolis, Memphis and Oklahoma City just to name a few all have Triple A baseball teams and are all smaller than San Antonio in terms of population.

Shreveport Captains were fun to watch around 1980. I got lots of autographs.

They had a brief stint as a Triple-A affiliate a few years ago, but they have a very long history in the Texas League, which dates back more than a hundred years.

AA allows them to compete in the TL with other regional teams.

Pretty cool that they’re affiliated with the Padres.

No clue to your question but I took my son and couple of his buddies to a AAA game last year. One of the kids said, “These guys aren’t that good since they aren’t in ‘the league’.”

Turned out to be a great teachable moment for all of them at 11 y/o.

AA has more true prospects than AAA, which is full of players who are usually older and borderline major-leaguers down there to be stashed for later major-league use or a holding tank for guys who weren’t cutting it at the big-league level.

That was the moral of the story. Between the 2 teams, 10 players played in a WS and 4 had WS rings.

The trend is to locate AAA teams closer to MLB team, such as the suburbs, like Gwinnett and Sugar Land.

They did acquire a team in AAA, the old AA team went to Amarillo I believe. However, in the MiLB restructure, joke was on them, new team got moved down to AA.
