One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

Heard about this movie all my life (55 now) and how great it was with Nicholson, Christopher Lloyd, Davito, Brad Dourif, Will Sampson and others…finally brought myself to watch it…
While the acting was great with all the interaction with the patients, it’s not a movie I would watch again, I was actually disappointed with it as a whole and I don’t see how Louise Fletcher won Best Actress for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched…I saw nothing of it being Oscar worthy…
I know I’m probably an outlier on this, but just did not enjoy it as a whole…

This is common when a movie gets built up and raved about over years/decades and then you finally see it, expecting the greatest movie of all time, you feel let down. What other movie that came out that year would you have given the Best Actress award to?

I can’t really speak to the award in that particular year, but I do think the Ratched character is way overrated on lists of the greatest movie villains. She’s 5th on AFI’s villains list from 2003.

Really slim picking that year. The other nominees were:
Isabele Adjani in "The Story of Adele H"
Ann Margaret in "Tommy"
Glenda Jackson in "Hedda"
Carol Kane in "Hestor Street"
Not exactly a "Who's Who" in cinema classics.

Marisa Berenson should've been nominated for Barry Lyndon (role was probably too subtle for 1975), but I still would've given it to Fletcher

I don't know. I thought it was great.

Isabelle Adjani - she was 20 or something and was probably one of the youngest to be nominated. Subway was a cool movie she did with Christopher Lambert. Possession is another I thought she was good in

I liked how the movie is ambiguous on whether or not Jack Nicholson's character is crazy or not.

I’ve watched it so many times I’ve lost count. It’s absolutely a study in acting at the highest level and a fascinating film overall. A classic.

Wow, I don’t even know how to respond to this. To each his own I guess.

Art is totally subjective so there’s nothing wrong with saying you didn’t like it. There’s almost unanimous agreement that this is a great film but that still doesn’t mean everybody will enjoy it.

Everybody has a right to his opinion regardless of how stupid and moronic it may be. I’m sure there are enough Twilight movies to keep you entertained though.

It’s a perfect movie. My favorite Nicholson performance

the fishing trip is one of the best scenes in movie history

Brilliant piece of art from our greatest movie making decade. Nicholson had a hell of a decade: Five Easy Pieces (70), Carnal Knowledge (71), The Last Detail (73), Chinatown (74), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (75) and then The Shining in 80.

It’s an amazing movie IMO. Also as someone who’s worked in them it’s the only movie I’ve ever seen that accurately portrays what a mental hospital is like on the inside.

The theme song was great too

I am twenty years younger than you, but I agree. My dad thought I was crazy when I told him that I did not really care for the movie.
