In TN instead of $30 to renew your tags each year its $300.

Might want to check that for your state.

My experience buying trucks out of state is that they collect Louisiana taxes based on my residency if they are registering the vehicle for me. I’d imagine the same should be true of teslas. If you register it in Florida, Louisiana is still going to want their taxes when you register it in Louisiana.

You pay Louisiana State sales tax. I think my TTL was around 7k when I got back to Louisiana and I paid it at the DMV. It’s around 10% and if you make over a certain amount you won’t qualify for the tax credit.

You have to pay sales tax twice?

I’m interested to see if Republican politicians completely reverse course and start supporting Elon Musk and other electric vehicle makers.

It’s amazing how much these people play political games and don’t actually have any real strong convictions or beliefs. It’s just “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” above all else.

Only if you register the car out of state and then move to Louisiana.

They give you some credit, but they still screw you.

They give you credit for what you paid so you pay the same amount either way.

$50k for the car x 7% Florida tax= $3500 of tax paid

10% La sales tax = $5,000

$5k-$3.5k credit for tax paid = $1.5 of tax owed when you register.

You need to show the tax paid to Florida

If better yet, see if you can get Tesla to not charge Florida tax as that won’t be the state of registration

They don’t charge you tax at delivery if they know you’re going to register it in different state. Got mine from Jackson and registered in LA. Paid TTL at registration once I got back to LA. You just won’t be able to roll the TTL into your financing if you financed it. So just make sure to have the cash on hand for TTL

Different issue, but you also have to pay a road use tax. I think the limit is $200.00

Thanks man, I know you know your stuff about this.

Hate to get rid of the cool plate that's on the car now, though...

This is Texas Rank according to Chat.

quote:

Texas would likely rank somewhere between 20th and 30th overall in terms of total EV cost savings, based on a balance of electricity costs, gas prices, incentives, and EV-related fees.

Here’s a breakdown of how Texas stacks up in the key categories:

1. Electricity Costs:

Ranking: Top 15 (Good)

Texas has relatively low residential electricity rates (around $0.14/kWh average), which helps keep EV charging costs down.

2. Gas Prices:

Ranking: Bottom 20 (Not Great for Savings)

Texas typically has low gas prices compared to the national average, so switching from gas to electric saves less per mile than in high-gas states like California or Hawaii.

3. State EV Incentives:

Ranking: Mid-Tier

Texas offers a $2,500 rebate for EV purchases (through the Texas Light-Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive Program), but funds are limited and not always available.

No additional perks like carpool access or tax waivers.

4. EV Fees:

Ranking: Lower-Tier (Penalty)

As of 2023, Texas implemented a $200 annual registration fee for EVs, which cuts into long-term savings.

Estimated Overall Rank: 25th out of 50

Texas has cheap electricity, low gas prices, a decent incentive (when available), but the $200 annual fee pulls it down a few spots.

If you'd like a chart comparing Texas to nearby states like Louisiana, Oklahoma, or California, I can build that for you too.

Here's how Louisiana compares:

1. Electricity Costs:

Ranking: Mid-Tier

2. Gas Prices:

Ranking: Bottom 20 (Less Favorable for Savings)

3. State EV Incentives:

Ranking: Limited

4. EV Fees:

Ranking: Moderate

Estimated Overall Rank: 30th to 40th out of 50

If you're interested in a detailed comparison between Louisiana and neighboring states like Texas or Mississippi regarding EV ownership costs, feel free to ask!

Why? I guess the good news is you get to learn about the charger situation on I-10. Might as well stop at OMV on the way to pay Louisiana’s sales tax.

What Republicans were opposed to were the regulations mandating ICE manufacturers invest in Electric Vehicles at the expense of the ICE vehicles and consumers who ultimately subsidize them by paying higher prices on the ICE vehicles they actually wanted to buy, and then the tax payer funding to prop up the EV market.

Republicans want the market to dictate what manufacturers make and what the public wants to buy, with some regulations about safety stuff.
