EXACTLY…

If you don’t cut the root/bulb, you’re fine. I use the radial cut then chop method and it works like a champ. You only cut into the root once when you slice it in half…

chill them and use a very sharp knife.

ding, ding, ding...........

Also, if you are overcome by onion tears (this is gonna sound and look really stupid), stick your face in the freezer wide eyed so the freezer fog can get to them.............it really works, but when somebody sees you with your head stuck in the freezer its like............

1.) keep a burning candle close
2.) keep a bowl of water close
3.) the best way.... freeze the onion before cutting it.

I'm sure there have been a lot of suggestions for you to cut them next to a candle.

Take it from someone who has spent a ton of time chopping onions- the only that that i have ever had be useful is if they're frozen (not to the point of being unable to cut, just frozen enough so the onion juice is solid).

If you soak the onion in water before and then cut the onion into a bowl of water, you'll hardly feel the effects.

But you'll lose a lot of flavor.

Even worse if you freeze them. The open flame suggestion comes from Alton Brown. He knows all.

Haven't read the thread, but put them in the refrigerator overnight. It cuts the problem out. Few vapors when they're cold.

i think the key is to chill, not freeze them. freezing may cut down on crying but it will have the adverse effect of destroying the onion cells. onions have a high water content and, thus, do not react well to freezing. freezing will destroy the cell walls and you will end up with a pile of mush once they thaw. depending on the dish, this is not a desirable outcome.

chilling them in the refrigerator is enough to cut down on the crying. no need to fully freeze them.

Be a goddam man, you're going to cry because you're a f*ckin' pussy. Now hold your hand over that open flame till you can smell the flesh burning---G. Gordon Liddy

My Grandma would always hold a piece of bread in her mouth when she cut onions. (I tried it once and it didn't work, but it gave my wife a good laugh!)

Here is the best answer of all. When you are in the kitchen cooking most times the stove is on and it is hot. I put a small fan on the counter and face it towards me while I am cutting onions.

No tears.

That simple.

Surprised no one has said the way my grandma tought me years ago.

use a sharp knife

Chop next to the sink with cold water running in the sink..

never bothers me..

also the round onions are much stronger than the flatter type onions... where the flatter type are sweeter.

I've never tried it, but I've heard of the match in the mouth, too.

Try a lit match in your mouth, and chop the onion before the flame reaches your face. You won't even think about the tears.
